Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, a platform enabling organizations to harness IoT data for actionable insights across physical operations including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing.
The Maps team builds the shared geospatial platform that underpins nearly all Samsara products. Maps are critical to vehicles, routes, sites, assets, and safety workflows—enabling the company to know where things are and how the physical world fits together. The team sources, ingests, enriches, and serves map data including road networks, points of interest, addresses, boundaries, and customer-specific map context. Internal customers are engineers building products for millions of workers and businesses that depend on them.
You will be hired as a Staff Software Engineer to help set the technical direction for this platform. You'll work across the geospatial stack: building data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling and serving map data, improving map matching and routing foundations, and creating APIs that make spatial capabilities reusable across Samsara. The team is small with broad ownership; the systems you build will become foundational infrastructure for teams across the company.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shape the technical direction of the Maps teams
- Build geospatial systems and integrations supporting foundational features across most Samsara products
- Scale offerings to support storage, query, and computational load of real-time features
- Consolidate existing team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings
- Build agentic solutions allowing customers to self-serve data visualization
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
- Partner with engineering leadership on strategic bets and tradeoffs
- Represent Samsara externally—talks, open source, community engagement with the mapping/geospatial ecosystem
- Live out cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team
You should enjoy working with internal and external customers to iterate and build software platforms, care about Samsara's mission (keeping grocery shelves stocked, lights on, workers safe), work with urgency, and collaborate effectively.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
- Strong programming and design fundamentals
- 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
- 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams
**Nice to have:**
- Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis (PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, geospatial data validation)
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems (GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap, OSM PBF); experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving these datasets
- Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without formal authority
