Gusto is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to build and own integrations between Gusto Pro and third-party tools used by accounting firms. You'll work hands-on across the full stack (Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq) to design, build, and extend integrations that connect Gusto with accounting software platforms. The role involves evaluating both traditional API integrations and emerging AI agent protocols like MCP (Model Context Protocol).
This is a high-ownership position on a small, growing team where the integrations roadmap is still being defined. You'll have real input into what gets built next and will partner closely with Product, Design, and Data Science teams to ensure integrations fit naturally into how accountants work.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Owning and extending existing third-party integrations while building new ones as the portfolio grows
- Designing and building reliable backend services (Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq) that sync data between Gusto and partner platforms
- Evaluating and helping build new integration patterns, including AI agent protocols like MCP
- Helping define the technical approach and roadmap as the Integrations domain expands
- Partnering with cross-functional teams to validate accountant workflows and iterate based on feedback
- Participating in code review and helping set the technical bar for a team establishing its engineering practices
- Mentoring other engineers as the team scales
Gusto supports over 500,000 small businesses nationwide with payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR services. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs). Hybrid work is expected: 2-3 days per week in office for those based in Gusto office locations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software development experience
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects end-to-end (scoping, planning, execution, stakeholder management, launch)
- Strong platform/application engineering background: services, APIs, third-party integrations, data flows, observability
- Comfortable operating in ambiguous, early-stage domains where roadmap isn't fully defined
- Ruby on Rails experience strongly preferred
- OAuth and third-party API integrations experience a plus
- Familiarity with AI agent protocols (e.g., MCP) or agentic integration patterns a plus
- Excellent communication skills to explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and cross-functional partners
- AI-native mindset with AI tools naturally embedded in daily engineering workflow (code generation, review, debugging, documentation)
