d-Matrix is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the company's build infrastructure and developer automation efforts. This is a high-impact role focused on unleashing generative AI through software and hardware innovation.
You will own d-Matrix's Bazel build system, completing an in-progress migration and designing the distributed build infrastructure from scratch. Your responsibilities include:
• Complete the Bazel migration, including the most complex remaining components
• Migrate the test suite to Bazel with correct tagging, sharding, and hardware-dependent test routing
• Design, deploy, and operate remote execution in production
• Build hermetic toolchains and reproducible builds across developer machines, CI, and hardware-attached runners
• Optimize cache hit rates and establish build-time baselines, then reduce median incremental build time and CI critical path
• Evolve the CI/CD system to support agent-assisted development
• Raise the standard of Bazel usage across teams by making best practices the default path
• Partner closely with development groups and infrastructure teams running the runner fleet and cloud environments
Your impact will be company-wide: when build and test time drops, every engineering group moves faster.
The role is hybrid, 3 days per week in Santa Clara, CA. You will work in a culture emphasizing respect, collaboration, humility, and direct communication, with a team driven by execution and tackling complex technical challenges.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Deep Bazel experience as an owner: custom rules, toolchains, and target graph design in large repositories
• Hands-on experience migrating a real codebase onto Bazel, including the long tail of edge cases
• Hands-on experience deploying and operating remote caching or remote execution (self-hosted or vendor-provided)
• Experience with hermetic, reproducible, and observable builds, including custom toolchains
• Strong knowledge of C++, Rust, Python, and container image builds
• Demonstrated persistence in debugging non-reproducible builds and unexplained cache misses to root cause
• Track record of partnering with other teams to understand needs and spread best practices
• Pragmatic bias toward incremental migration that keeps people productive
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience migrating test suites to Bazel
• Kubernetes-based executor pools
• Embedded or firmware cross-compilation experience
• Open source contributions to the Bazel ecosystem
