Salary: CAD 181,000 - 241,000 / annual

Affirm is building a new search and discovery team to power its advertising platform and marketplace. This Staff Software Engineer role owns the technical strategy and execution for backend systems that drive search, recommendations, and discovery experiences for consumers shopping through Affirm. You will set technical direction on a year-long horizon, collaborating with product, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage trade-offs. You'll act as a force-multiplier for your team by defining technical solutions, establishing operational processes, and owning team operations including monitoring, on-call rotations, and incident response. You will foster a culture of quality by setting code review and design standards, and develop talent through mentorship and feedback. Key responsibilities include: - Designing and launching backend systems at scale - Collaborating across product development lifecycle to align technical strategy with business impact - Ensuring system reliability, availability, and observability - Setting and advocating for technical standards across teams - Developing and mentoring engineering talent - Exploring opportunities to improve customer experience, monetization, and merchant value - Laying foundation for agentic platform capabilities The role is fully remote within Canada, with flexibility built in. New hires attend an in-person onboarding experience. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale (Python or Kotlin) - Extensive track record developing highly available distributed systems (AWS, MySQL, Spark, Kubernetes) - Experience developing consumer experiences using UI frameworks like React - 2+ years working in search or recommendation engines - Demonstrated ability to deliver major features, system components, or deprecations through technical and execution planning - High-quality code that is easily understood and used by others - Comfort with ambiguity and ability to work across language idioms and large system architecture - Growth trajectory demonstrating mastery of gathering and iterating on feedback - Strong verbal and written communication skills for global team collaboration
