me&u is a hospitality technology platform used by 6000+ bars, pubs, and restaurants across five countries to create memorable guest experiences and grow their brands. The company merged two leading hospitality tech firms (Mr Yum and me&u) in November 2023 and is headquartered in Melbourne with 200 staff globally.
You'll join the Reservations stream as a Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer, taking on ambiguous problems, owning solution design, and shaping the technical direction of your team's systems. This role emphasizes full-breadth engineers ("broken comb" shaped professionals with multiple areas of expertise) who can deliver end-to-end value in small, cross-functional teams.
me&u builds AI-natively: agents handle most implementation while engineers shape problems, write specs and context for agents, and own quality. You'll lead by example, setting standards for how the team works with AI tools, determining what good context looks like, which guardrails are executable, and when AI output is sufficient versus requiring human review.
Key responsibilities include:
- Co-creating with product and design: participate in discovery, hear directly from customers, and translate technical acumen into specs and story slices for both humans and agents
- Planning work for agent execution, reviewing output for logic and design (not syntax), and taking accountability for production quality
- Building and maintaining foundations agents inherit: context files, skills, hooks, architectural lint rules, and regression suites that make codebases safer to delegate
- Owning solution and system design across initiatives and features, working with product, design, and custodianship leads to validate ideas and make trade-offs
- Conducting rigorous code reviews of both AI-generated and human-written PRs, enforcing conventions and helping decide which changes can be trusted with lighter review
- Mentoring less experienced team members on working effectively with agents and creating growth opportunities
- Championing engineering principles, participating in engineering guilds, and shaping architecture and practices
- Making clear directional calls when customer needs, tech debt, and delivery pace conflict, documenting reasoning for follow-on decisions
- Guiding your own work and collaborating with people and agents toward timely, efficient delivery
- Thinking through second-order effects before shipping (support load, venue operations, billing edge cases) and owning customer outcomes
Requirements:
- Agentic fluency: daily use of agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) in production work; ability to demonstrate a codebase you've made easier for agents to work in
- Distributed systems: commercial experience designing and running distributed systems and microservices on cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
- Backend strength: strong in at least one backend language such as TypeScript (Node.js), C#, Python, Ruby, or Java; TypeScript/Node.js is a strong advantage
- Full-stack capability: comfortable in React on the front end, relational or document databases on the back, and able to design and implement REST or GraphQL APIs
- Quality and operations: test-driven habits, observability (logging, monitoring, alerting), and practical web security
- Product judgment: experience working closely with product managers and designers; comfort talking to customers directly and explaining what you're building and why
- Problem solving: ability to take on complex, ambiguous problems and turn them into clear, buildable paths
- Communication: ability to write system designs, give constructive feedback in review, and keep stakeholders informed
- Attention to detail: willingness to take responsibility for engineering solution quality, including performance, scalability, and maintainability
Nice to have:
- Experience in hospitality, payments, or other regulated, high-volume consumer domains
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code
