Trust & Will is the leading digital estate planning platform, trusted by over one million users. Founded in 2017, the company provides modern, accessible solutions to help families protect their legacies with attorney-approved, legally valid documents tailored to individual state requirements.
As a Staff Product Engineer, you will take product work from customer or business need through production, combining product judgment, full-stack engineering, and AI-agent-driven development. This is a staff-level individual contributor role with company-wide scope.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own product and engineering work end-to-end, from intake through launch and beyond.
- Partner with product managers on problem definition, customer needs, and business case; bring perspective on scope, sequencing, and what not to build.
- Partner with engineering leaders and senior engineers on architecture, design reviews, and technical direction.
- Engage directly with members, advisors, attorneys, and internal teams to understand use cases.
- Design and ship across the full platform: UI, services, data, and integrations.
- Carry projects end-to-end, partnering with others as needed.
- Build testing, safe release processes, and production visibility into work; make tradeoffs explicit.
- Move across product areas as priorities shift, pairing with others and leaving behind reusable systems.
AI-First Approach:
The role emphasizes delegating outcomes to AI agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) by specifying clear goals, constraints, and acceptance criteria. You will build validation into systems through tests, evaluations, automated checks, and production signals so agents confirm their own work before human review. You set and govern agent boundaries, handle escalations, and maintain step-by-step supervision for high-risk work. You will help other engineers transition from using AI as an assistant to delegating whole outcomes safely. During interviews, candidates must walk through a real outcome they delegated to agents, including validation and human oversight.
Success Metrics:
- Important product work ships and is used by members, advisors, or teams.
- Product managers and engineering leaders view this role as a peer partner who makes their plans easier to deliver.
- Architecture and design decisions are reviewed, documented, and fit the platform.
- Shipped work is testable, observable, and reversible.
- Engineers and product partners who work with you ship faster at the same or higher quality bar.
- Agents deliver and validate defined outcomes within clear boundaries; people handle exceptions.
Requirements:
- 8+ years building and shipping customer-facing software, or equivalent depth, including work at staff, principal, or lead level.
- Staff-level product judgment: framing ambiguous problems, defining success, setting scope, and deciding what not to build.
- Staff-level engineering depth: system design across user interfaces, APIs, and relational data, with sound tradeoffs between speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Proven record of shipping from idea to production, with or without detailed specs, and owning results after launch.
- Experience partnering as a peer with product managers, designers, and engineering leaders; bringing decisions through design and architecture review.
- Comfort working directly with customers and non-technical partners, translating their needs into scope.
- Care for quality, security, and reliability in production, especially for products handling sensitive personal and financial information.
- Ability to influence without formal authority through clear writing, explicit tradeoffs, pairing, and example.
- Must reside in one of the following states: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Nevada, or Utah.
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience in regulated or high-trust products (financial services, legal, insurance, health).
- Founder, founding engineer, or early product engineer experience building from scratch.
- Experience writing product specs, running customer research, or working in product management.
- Experience leading cross-team work that improved how a team builds.
- Experience on high-autonomy, remote-first teams with loosely defined problems.
