Ground News is a news comparison platform helping readers navigate media bias and break free from algorithmic echo chambers. The platform includes a mobile app, web app, and browser extension serving a community of mindful readers. Ground is subscription-supported rather than ad-driven, and has been recognized as #1 on Product Hunt, #2 in the 2025 Apple Design Awards (Social Impact category), and a 3-time US App of the Day winner.
As Staff Engineer, Web, you will own the technical direction of Ground's web properties that convert visitors into paying subscribers. You'll work within the Frontend chapter as part of the Growth & Monetization pod, collaborating with Revenue Growth, Marketing, Sponsorships, and CRO teams. This is an engineering-focused role—not design—where you'll own architecture, experimentation infrastructure, performance optimization, and enabling non-engineers to ship experiments safely.
Within 90–180 days, success means marketing and growth teammates can independently ship landing-page changes, modals, or pricing experiments without engineering involvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting technical strategy for Ground's web properties with direct accountability for user growth and subscription revenue
- Leading migration and governance of the marketing-tech stack (currently Unbounce, likely moving to Framer)
- Owning the web experimentation program end-to-end
- Optimizing web performance, accessibility, SEO, and Core Web Vitals for a consumer property serving millions
- Providing senior technical guidance in code review and architecture across the frontend chapter
- Implementing safe rollout practices on Flightcontrol for revenue-critical surfaces
You'll occasionally travel to the Kitchener, Ontario headquarters and company-wide All Hands meetups. Ground is co-founded by a former NASA engineer and Bain consultant, and offers a remote-first environment with competitive total rewards, health & wellness coverage, professional development, and a mission-driven culture.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years building production web applications, with 3+ years at senior or staff individual contributor level
- Deep, hands-on expertise in Next.js, React, and TypeScript at scale
- Specific, quantifiable track record of growing user base or revenue from a web property
- Hands-on experience running A/B or multivariate experiments end-to-end (hypothesis framing, sample sizing, measurement, result interpretation)
- Direct experience working inside or alongside a CRO function, fluent in marketing-tech tooling (Unbounce, Framer, Webflow, or similar)
- Experience with PostHog, Amplitude, or Segment, and building trustworthy funnel instrumentation from scratch
- Experience shipping to production on revenue-critical surfaces with feature flagging, monitoring, and rollback discipline
- Willingness to travel occasionally to Kitchener HQ and All Hands meetups
BONUS: Technical coaching experience; subscription or consumer-media product background.
