Jane App is seeking a Staff Developer to lead the Patient Booking Web team, a newer, high-impact team responsible for the patient-facing booking experience across web and embedded contexts. The role reports to Shane, who leads the team and has previously managed engineering at Amazon, Hootsuite, and Coinbase.
The Patient Booking Web team owns the online booking page, My Account, and the embeddable booking experience that clinics integrate into their own websites. Millions of patients use these interfaces to book healthcare appointments (physio, massage, counselling, etc.) every month. The team is modernizing the booking platform by migrating from legacy code to React incrementally, keeping the product live and functional throughout the migration.
As Staff Developer, you will be the technical leader on this small, curious team. Your responsibilities include:
- Shape the architecture for migrating Online Booking and My Account to React, including routing, data management, state handling, and strategies for running legacy and new code side-by-side during the transition.
- Identify risks early and present clear options to the team, enabling confident decision-making.
- Write production code weekly in React, TypeScript, and Rails, establishing patterns the team will follow.
- Champion accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA) from the first commit, ensuring keyboard navigation, focus management, and screen reader support are built in and tested.
- Mentor and grow developers through pairing, code reviews, and hands-on guidance.
- Collaborate with Design on the component library to address booking experience gaps.
- Coordinate with adjacent teams migrating their own pages to React on independent timelines.
- Drive safe, gradual rollouts using feature flags and production monitoring so large changes ship in small, pausable steps.
- Apply AI thoughtfully to the migration effort—using agentic workflows where they genuinely accelerate progress while maintaining quality oversight.
Jane is a founder-led, high-growth SaaS company headquartered in North Vancouver, BC, with over 700 employees distributed across Canada, the US, and the UK. The company builds practice management and patient engagement tools for thousands of clinics. The culture emphasizes impact, learning agility, adaptability, and open communication.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated expertise at staff or technical lead level.
- Deep, hands-on proficiency in React and TypeScript, including client-side routing, browser history APIs, and state management (Redux Toolkit or equivalent).
- Full-stack background with strong frontend expertise; ideally, experience migrating a legacy frontend to React incrementally while maintaining production uptime.
- Practical experience applying WCAG 2.1 AA standards to real interfaces, including keyboard behavior, focus management, and ARIA.
- Comfort designing APIs in collaboration with backend engineers; experience with feature flags, gradual rollouts, and production monitoring.
- Proven track record of technical leadership: writing design documents, making sound decisions under uncertainty, and mentoring other developers.
- Collaborative, low-ego approach; ability to document reasoning, adapt when evidence warrants, and raise concerns early with constructive options.
- Regular use of AI in coding workflows and curiosity about systematic AI application (e.g., agentic workflows) for large-scale migrations.
- Nice-to-have: Ruby on Rails experience (company will support learning on the job); hands-on screen reader testing (JAWS, NVDA); experience building embeddable widgets or web components.
