Salary: CAD 109,400 - 191,500 / annual
ServiceNow's SWAT (Software Action Team) is seeking a Staff Database Engineer to ensure production stability of customer applications and infrastructure services. You will be a subject matter expert in production database troubleshooting, ServiceNow instance performance optimization, and Linux performance analysis across on-premises and hyperscaler environments.
In this role, you will own complex incident root cause analysis across multi-tenant PostgreSQL and MariaDB fleets at scale, develop observability and automation to prevent recurrence of critical issues, and influence infrastructure decisions that shape the multi-tenant cloud platform. You will mentor and collaborate with engineers across operations, support, and development teams, working in a fast-paced, innovative environment with direct influence on the organization and all customers.
Key responsibilities include becoming an SME in production database troubleshooting and ServiceNow instance performance issues, owning complex incident RCA across multi-tenant database fleets, developing observability and automation solutions, influencing infrastructure decisions, and mentoring cross-functional teams. You will support the infrastructure by learning the platform end-to-end and leverage AI-powered tools and insights to enhance problem-solving and decision-making.
Note: This position requires successful completion of a Government of Canada Reliability Status screening as a condition of employment, which requires 5 years of verifiable background history including identity verification, education verification, criminal record check, and credit check. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Reliability Status, generally requiring Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent resident status.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of experience on multiple relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, including MVCC, transaction management, vacuum mechanics, database and query performance tuning, buffer management, WAL architecture, backup/restore
- 5+ years of database management and performance tuning
- 5+ years of experience supporting or testing large-scale web-based distributed applications on containers (Apache/Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic, WebSphere) in Unix environments
- 3+ years of experience developing on SaaS, PaaS, or Cloud Infrastructure products/solutions
- Proven experience with concurrency, multithreading, and distributed system architectures
- Strong Unix skills: development, navigation, file manipulation, permissions, searching/finding files and text contents, administrative actions
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with aptitude for learning new technologies
- Experience developing and deploying mission-critical software
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent technical discipline, or similar work experience
- Eagerness to learn everything about the ServiceNow Platform
- Experience leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Scripting: basic shell scripting, Python, JavaScript, Ansible
- Formal experience on DevOps (Kubernetes and CI/CD pipeline), Performance, or support teams supporting web-based applications
- Demonstrated experience leading individual projects, including scheduling and reporting
- Strong experience with performance and stress testing tools and approaches for driving realistic customer simulations
