Tilt is a fintech company using machine learning and real-time financial signals to provide credit access to underserved populations globally. The company operates multiple products including NIRA (India) and Cashalo, serving millions of customers across 14 countries.
As a Staff Backend Engineer on the NIRA platform, you will lead a critical domain within Tilt's credit platform, owning strategy, design, and delivery end-to-end. You'll work closely with the Principal Engineer, General Manager, and cross-functional partners across NIRA, Cashalo, and US teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning a core domain: lead technical strategy, design, and delivery for a critical part of NIRA's platform
- Setting technical direction: identify strategic needs and surface risks proactively
- Driving complex, high-stakes initiatives from design through shipping
- Championing AI-native engineering practices and tools (Claude, Cursor, Augment) across the team
- Mentoring engineers to Senior level and raising the technical bar in Bangalore
- Leading incident response for SEV1 and lower-severity incidents to resolution
- Bridging global teams and aligning with Principal Engineering and peers across products
- Influencing product roadmap through technical tradeoffs and architectural decisions
- Simplifying system designs to prevent complexity accumulation
You'll work in a virtual-first, globally distributed environment with twice-yearly in-person onsites. REQUIREMENTS:
- 9+ years building web APIs, ideally in Java and Spring Boot
- Deep experience with financial systems: state machines, complex lifecycles
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and queue-based architectures
- Proven track record scaling consumer products at high transaction volume
- End-to-end ownership capability: design, execution, and reporting on own initiatives
- Comfort making fast decisions with incomplete information
- Active mentorship experience raising the bar for engineers
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI development tools
- Bias for simplicity over clever abstractions
