Salary: USD 150,000 - 300,000 / annual

Verkada is a high-growth, well-funded physical AI platform company (5.8B valuation, 1B+ annualized bookings, 30,000+ customers including 100+ Fortune 500 companies) transforming organizational security with integrated solutions for video, access control, air quality, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The Core Licensing & Devices team owns the critical financial layer that converts Verkada's licenses into recognized revenue: a double-entry accounting ledger that reconciles every license into daily revenue recognition. This system is what Finance closes the books on and what auditors trace, making correctness non-negotiable. As Verkada scales past millions of devices and matures toward stricter reporting and audit requirements, this system becomes load-bearing infrastructure. You will own the double-entry accounting ledger and its correctness guarantees under concurrency, retries, and failure modes. You'll design and lead systems behind upmarket licensing: pay-as-you-go metering and billing, fixed-term commitments, and enterprise packaging. You'll build reconciliation and controls enabling Finance to close books daily and auditors to trace any recognized dollar to its source with full auditability, immutability, and lineage. You'll partner with Finance, Accounting, Revenue, and Product to translate revenue-recognition policy (ASC 606, deferred revenue, contract modifications, true-ups) into precise, testable system behavior. As a Staff engineer, you'll lead major features end-to-end and mentor others through design reviews, code reviews, written documentation, and direct mentorship. You'll drive operational rigor: strong observability, tight SLOs, low pager noise, and blameless incident learning. You'll help shape the platform's roadmap toward the company's biggest long-term bets as Verkada scales. The team is small, high-trust, and high-autonomy. Direct feedback, learning out loud, and a high bar on both execution and written communication are core values. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years building backend services with strong correctness, consistency, and durability guarantees at scale - Depth in financial or transactional systems: ledgers, double-entry accounting, billing, payments, or revenue recognition; you understand why idempotency, exactly-once semantics, immutability, and reconciliation matter and have built for them - Comfort working shoulder-to-shoulder with Finance and Accounting, or a track record of getting deep in unfamiliar, high-stakes domains fast - Fluency in Python or Go (interviews conducted in one of these languages) - Track record of partnering with Finance, Accounting, or other non-engineering stakeholders, translating policy and ambiguity into systems they can rely on - At Staff level: ability to set technical direction across teams, shape shared architecture, and raise the bar on how the org designs and operates critical financial systems - Bonus: experience preparing financial systems for audit (SOX or external financial audit) Note: This role requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency for FedRAMP compliance and requires onsite presence five days per week.
