Plug is an automotive fintech startup building a marketplace exclusively for used electric vehicles. Founded in 2023 by former Tesla executives and backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners ($20M Series A), Plug has facilitated $100M in EV sales. The company operates as an AI-native startup connecting consumers, dealers, and commercial partners through a platform for trading, selling, and auctioning used EVs.
You will own design end-to-end across Plug's consumer, dealer, and commercial partner surfaces. This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to the SVP of Product & Technology, with high autonomy and direct influence on company outcomes.
Key responsibilities:
- Own end-to-end design for OEM, commercial partner, and dealer-facing surfaces from concept through shipped product
- Set the design bar and taste standard across the organization
- Define scalable design systems, prototyping workflows, and handoff processes to enable fast shipping without drift
- Lead customer research directly—interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing—to deeply understand how partners and dealers work
- Translate complex B2B workflows (inventory processing, bidding, API integrations) into simple, fast, trustworthy interfaces for professional daily use
- Drive innovation in how the team works with AI, not just what gets designed
- Partner closely with product and engineering from problem framing through delivery, not just at handoff
- Design and iterate based on usage data, session replays, experiment results, and qualitative research
- Represent the customer voice in roadmap and prioritization discussions, backed by evidence
- Work directly with high-value external partners to understand workflows and constraints
- Empower teams to design independently while maintaining governance as the final taste-maker
Requirements:
- 6+ years in product design with a strong track record designing B2B SaaS products for professional or enterprise users
- Excellent customer research skills; ability to uncover actual needs beyond stated wants
- Experience designing complex workflows (dashboards, admin tools, partner platforms, marketplaces) into simple interfaces
- Comfortable operating at the intersection of design, product, and engineering with strong opinions loosely held
- Hands-on, shipped experience building with AI tools; you've already changed your own workflow because of them and are energized by designing the workflow, not just using tools
- Judgment about when to spend craft—using AI to move fast on work that should be fast, knowing which surfaces must be hand-made
- Builder mentality with broad ownership in a fluid-role environment where lines between product, engineering, and design blur
- Strong communication skills; able to present work, defend decisions with evidence, and influence cross-functionally
- Portfolio demonstrating both craft and process
- Authorized to work in the US for any employer
- Prior experience in automotive, EV, marketplace, or fintech systems is a plus
