Notion is building a collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. This role focuses on building the native Android foundation for Notion's mobile experience, enabling users to do substantive knowledge work from their phones.
You'll help build core Android surfaces including page rendering, writing and editing, navigation, and features like Home, Search, and Inbox. The work spans the Android stack (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose) with opportunities to engage with Notion's shared Rust layer and AI tools for mobile development. You'll partner with experienced product and mobile AI engineers to identify bottlenecks, explore new Android capabilities, and shape what ships in the app.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shipping the core Notion experience on Android by building and polishing surfaces people use daily on a native Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack that is fast, smooth, and reliable offline
- Partnering with product managers and designers to turn ideas into shipped features, using feedback and data to iterate
- Owning a core product area (such as Home, Inbox, or editor components) from idea to launch within your first year
- Improving app performance by finding and fixing issues in startup time, scrolling, typing latency, crashes, and memory use, with appropriate testing and monitoring
Notion works from offices on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (Anchor Days). This role can be based in San Francisco or New York City.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid Android fundamentals: shipped Android apps through work, internships, or personal projects; comfortable with modern Android including Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, and Gradle. Experience with large, modular codebases is a plus.
- Care for native UI and performance: enjoy making UI feel fast and smooth; curious about custom text rendering, complex lazy lists, or rich-text editing. Experience with performance profiling, realtime collaboration, or offline sync is a plus.
- Product instincts: care about how the app feels to use, not just how it works; attention to interaction details and polish; use feedback and data to decide what to build next.
- Thoughtful problem-solving and clear communication: build a clear picture of problems before fixing; explain trade-offs in writing; ask for help early when stuck. Experience moving hybrid or web-based surfaces to native, or building 0→1 products, is a plus.
- AI-native, end-to-end engineering practice: use AI tools and agents as real collaborators; frame tasks clearly; review generated changes; test behavior; design workflows that make the broader team more effective. Web experience (TypeScript, React, Node) is welcome but not required.
