Torc, now part of the Daimler family, is a leader in autonomous driving technology focused on developing software for automated trucks. The Mission Interface Software Engineer plays a key role in delivering Vehicle Intent software into the automated driving system, enabling Mission Control and Remote Assistance teams to interact with the self-driving truck's software stack.
In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize software that creates the interface between Autonomy and Mission Control, Remote Assistance, Route Advisor, and On Truck Management systems. You'll lead development of real-time C++ software components for vehicle guidance and status monitoring, translate system-level requirements into robust software architectures, and contribute to simulation and testing frameworks for validation under diverse operational design domains.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including back office, perception, controls, and safety to ensure end-to-end system integration. The role involves mentoring peers through technical reviews, staying current with research in global route planning and analytical planning methods, and contributing to integration of machine learning techniques such as route-rerouting, learned cost models, and reinforcement learning for tactical decision-making.
Additional responsibilities include driving continuous improvement in software quality, safety, and performance; supporting safety-critical development practices aligned with automotive standards; and communicating technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field plus 4+ years of experience, OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field plus 0-3+ years of experience
- Strong C++ programming skills (C++14/17 or later) with experience in real-time, safety-critical, or high-performance applications
- Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and kinematic models (e.g., bicycle model, Ackermann steering, dynamic feasibility)
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable code with emphasis on software engineering best practices
- 5+ years experience architecting, designing, and implementing embedded software solutions including: producing scalable C++ code, optimizing for speed and memory usage, validating solutions through unit and systems-level testing, and creating technical documentation
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with fundamental AV/ADAS components and concepts
- Experience with observability and visualization platforms (Datadog, Tableau, Foxglove) for telemetry monitoring and system performance analysis
- 2–5 years professional Python development experience with production-quality code
- Experience with robotic/autonomous frameworks (ROS/ROS2, Autoware, Apollo) and communication protocols like CAN and Ethernet
- Understanding of safety and software engineering standards (ISO 26262, SOTIF, ASPICE, CMMI) and validation methodologies
- Experience with software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and vehicle testing
- Research/industry experience in robotics or autonomy
