Generalist is building embodied foundation models and general intelligence for the physical world, with a focus on robot dexterity. The company combines large-scale AI and robotics, with a team of researchers and engineers from OpenAI, Boston Dynamics, Google DeepMind, and other frontier labs.
As a Frontend Engineer, you will build the web interfaces that make advanced robotics intuitive and useful for researchers, robot operators, and customers. You'll own frontend development from early prototypes through production, working closely with design, product, and infrastructure teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building web applications for robot monitoring, data exploration, model training and evaluation, and internal tooling
- Translating complex technical requirements into clear, responsive interfaces that enable users to make decisions and take action
- Developing interactive visualizations for robot telemetry, video, experiment results, and system health
- Shaping frontend architecture that simplifies complex workflows and makes code easy to test and extend as the product scales
- Establishing a cohesive design system across research platforms and robot operator interfaces with shared components, styles, and interaction patterns
- Collaborating directly with researchers, operators, and customers to understand workflows, test ideas, and iterate based on feedback
- Improving the frontend development experience through clear conventions, reusable patterns, and tooling that helps engineers build consistent features quickly
Requirements:
- Production experience shipping and maintaining web applications using TypeScript, React, and modern frontend tooling
- Strong opinions on shared component libraries and UI patterns with good judgment about standardization
- Strong frontend architecture fundamentals: clear component boundaries, explicit application state, ability to simplify complex code
- Experience managing asynchronous data and user interactions, keeping interfaces accurate and usable during background updates, slow requests, and failures
- Clear communication and collaborative approach to working across engineering, design, and product teams
Nice to have:
- Experience building tools for robotics, AI, scientific computing, or technically complex domains
- Experience with real-time interfaces, streaming data, or event-driven systems
- Experience optimizing data-intensive interfaces for performance (large tables, interactive visualizations, video)
- Experience consolidating UI patterns and incrementally modernizing existing frontends while shipping improvements
- Interest in frontend developer tooling (component previews, advanced end-to-end or browser tests)
- Experience with browser performance profiling, frontend observability, and automated testing
