Calm is a leading mental health platform with over 180 million downloads globally and a suite of evidence-based solutions (Calm Health) serving 3,500+ organizations and 42 million covered lives. The company is seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to lead quality assurance and testing strategy across Calm's consumer app and internal tools.
In this role, you will own the testing strategy and quality bar for the Calm app and internal content/admin tools. You'll architect and build automated test frameworks and suites covering UI, API, mobile, and integration testing, ensuring they run reliably within CI/CD pipelines. You'll review requirements, specs, and pull requests early to catch issues in-sprint rather than at release. Working closely with consumer product teams, you'll manage release planning, certification, and post-launch health monitoring.
A significant portion of your time (~30%) will be spent partnering with product and design teams to define acceptance criteria and maintain release timelines. You'll manage and direct an offshore QA team, gradually shifting their focus toward automation and higher-value testing. You'll triage and document defects with actionable detail, drive them to resolution, and track quality metrics including coverage, flakiness, escaped defects, and release stability. You'll leverage AI-assisted tooling to accelerate test creation and maintenance, and as the role grows, you may contribute to feature development in Android, iOS, backend, or web platforms.
This is a people-management role with technical depth, requiring you to balance hands-on test automation work with team leadership and strategic quality planning.
**Requirements:**
- 3+ years of experience as a software engineer, SDET, or QA automation engineer
- Strong programming skills in Java and JavaScript/TypeScript
- Hands-on experience building test automation frameworks and integrating them into CI/CD pipelines
- Experience testing mobile apps (iOS and/or Android)
- Experience leading QA efforts and owning release readiness, ideally with distributed or offshore teams
- Comfortable using AI-assisted tools in testing and development workflow
**Nice to Haves:**
- Experience with a consumer subscription or mobile app at scale
- Hands-on development experience in a mobile, backend, or web codebase
