Salary: USD 75,000 - 142,000 / annual
Formlabs is seeking an SLS Materials Scientist to develop world-class materials for selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing systems. The role spans the full lifecycle from initial lab exploration through validation and commercialization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build and optimize SLS material formulations, advancing material performance boundaries
- Lead research initiatives that translate discoveries into next-generation solutions
- Collaborate with product, hardware, and software teams to iterate on materials based on customer feedback and real-world performance data
- Develop and refine methodologies to evaluate material formulations in coordination with SLS print systems, balancing material chemistry, thermal dynamics, and printing parameters
- Design and conduct rigorous experiments to optimize materials, leveraging data-driven approaches
- Document findings and maintain comprehensive records of material development progress

Requirements:
- Proven experience bringing a new material to market from ideation through production
- Solid understanding of materials science fundamentals and polymer product development
- Hands-on experience in thermoplastic engineering
- Demonstrated ability to conduct extensive testing and troubleshooting (comfort with iterative experimentation)
- Strong data analysis skills and ability to design rigorous experiments
- Capacity to work autonomously and take initiative to learn new skills
- Understanding of documentation best practices
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field
Bonus Skills:
- Experience developing materials for 3D printing (particularly SLA/DLP or SLS systems)
- 3D CAD modeling proficiency
- Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, SQL, or similar)
