Salary: USD 75,000 - 142,000 / annual
Formlabs is seeking a Materials Scientist to develop world-class SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) materials for 3D printing. The role spans the full lifecycle from initial lab exploration through validation and commercialization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and optimizing SLS material formulations, pushing performance boundaries to create next-generation solutions
- Partnering with product, hardware, and software teams to iterate on material performance based on customer feedback and real-world use cases
- Developing methodologies to evaluate material formulations in coordination with SLS print systems, balancing material chemistry, thermal dynamics, and printing parameters
- Conducting rigorous experimentation and troubleshooting to optimize materials
- Documenting findings and maintaining detailed records of material development progress

Requirements:
- Experience bringing a new material to market from ideation through production
- Solid understanding of materials science fundamentals and polymer product development
- Hands-on experience in thermoplastic engineering
- Demonstrated ability to design and conduct rigorous experiments to optimize materials
- Ability to work autonomously, take initiative, and learn new skills to complete objectives
- Understanding of good documentation practices
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field
Bonus skills:
- Experience developing materials for 3D printing, especially SLA/DLP or SLS printers
- 3D CAD modeling
- Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, SQL, etc.)
