Heron Power is building cutting-edge power electronics for grid modernization, focusing on scalable hardware and software solutions to accelerate electrification. The company's leadership team has extensive experience designing and shipping gigawatts of power conversion products.
As a Senior/Staff Software Engineer on the Connected Systems team, you will own critical components of the platform that enables smart functionality across Heron products. You'll build scalable backend services and data platforms for industrial IoT deployments, including telemetry ingestion, processing, storage, and analytics pipelines that support fleet monitoring and system fault analysis. Your work will power energy-critical infrastructure deployed in challenging field environments with limited connectivity.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building scalable backend services and data platforms for industrial IoT deployments
- Designing and implementing telemetry ingestion, stream processing, and event-driven systems
- Developing services and workflows for diagnostics, remote troubleshooting, asset lifecycle tracking, and over-the-air firmware updates
- Creating APIs, event-driven services, and data models enabling reliable integration across Connected Systems, Firmware, Manufacturing, and System Test teams
- Contributing to software quality through code reviews, testing strategies, observability, and operational excellence
You will collaborate closely with embedded software engineers on Cabinet Gateway integration, work with Manufacturing and System Test teams to improve data availability and traceability, partner with DevOps on CI/CD and deployment automation, and support development of customer-facing monitoring dashboards. You'll also share technical input with engineering leadership on roadmap and prioritization.
The role is hands-on and production-focused, requiring someone who can solve complex distributed systems problems and work across multiple engineering disciplines. You'll own meaningful components from design through operation, with real ownership and impact in a fast-moving, deeply technical environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of significant components of a distributed system
- Experience contributing to complex software products from design through production deployment
- Experience building or contributing to industrial IoT, telemetry, fleet management, or large-scale connected systems
- Strong backend service design and implementation experience in Python, Golang, Rust, Java, or similar languages
- Experience building telemetry ingestion, stream processing, or event-driven systems using Kafka or cloud-native equivalents
- Solid understanding of APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and data platform design
- Experience collaborating across firmware, hardware, manufacturing, test, and software teams
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills in production environments
Nice to have: fault detection/diagnostics/prognostics systems experience, industrial networking/SCADA/edge computing familiarity, frontend technologies (React), remote device management and firmware update systems.
