The Public Interest Company is a healthtech platform that combines AI and legal technology to identify and recover third-party liability claims for health plans, risk-bearing provider groups, and self-funded employers. The company handles the entire recovery process while protecting members and streamlining operations, enabling healthcare organizations to maximize financial performance and recoup dollars toward care delivery.
As a Senior/Staff Software Engineer, you will design, build, and scale the core systems powering claims identification, case management, and recovery workflows. This is a high-ownership role focused on solving complex engineering problems in a data-heavy, highly regulated healthcare environment.
You will architect and maintain production systems that integrate AI/ML models, legal datasets, and large volumes of transactional and healthcare data. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing backend services, APIs, and orchestration workflows that support claim identification and case routing; building scalable systems interfacing with AI/ML models and healthcare data; developing durable, fault-tolerant workflows using Temporal; creating clean, maintainable, high-performance code in Python (FastAPI) and TypeScript (Next.js); maintaining and optimizing AWS cloud infrastructure (ECS, RDS/Postgres, Redis, secure deployment pipelines); collaborating with product and business stakeholders to translate operational needs into engineering solutions; upholding engineering best practices including testing, documentation, version control, and code review; and exploring new technologies that improve reliability or efficiency.
You will report to the VP of Engineering and work in a fast-paced startup environment where practical problem-solving and elegant technical solutions are valued.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally in backend or full-stack roles
- Strong proficiency in Python and modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Django, Flask, etc.)
- Production systems experience in cloud environments (AWS preferred)
- Familiarity with distributed systems, workflow orchestration, and event-driven architectures
- Ability to design and implement reliable, maintainable, and secure systems in a fast-paced startup environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with comfort interacting directly with product and business teams
- Preference for practical problem-solving and simple, elegant technical solutions
