Salary: USD 180,000 - 270,000 / annual
SmithRx is a venture-backed healthtech company disrupting the Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) sector with a next-generation drug acquisition platform. The company has onboarded hundreds of thousands of members since 2016 and is rapidly growing.
As a Senior Staff Software Engineer, you will play a key role across the entire engineering lifecycle—design, documentation, build, test, and maintenance of the SmithRx product suite. You will advocate for best practices, coding standards, and large-scale system design perspectives across the team. This is a high-impact individual contributor role requiring versatility, leadership, and ownership qualities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and maintain back-end architecture and product features using languages such as Golang, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node, GraphQL, and SQL, leveraging full CI/CD for rapid iteration
- Collaborate with stakeholders and technical leads to understand functional and technical requirements and produce high-quality, scalable software and services
- Provide scope and risk estimates for system and feature builds by creating technical design documentation
- Apply software development best practices, design patterns, testing, automation, tools, and technologies
- Leverage AWS technologies (Lambda, Fargate) for job handling and batch processing
- Troubleshoot production issues through triage, impact assessment, mitigation planning, and root cause analysis
- Coach and mentor junior team members through code reviews, design feedback, and guidance on engineering projects
- Work with senior leadership to translate technical vision into quarterly roadmaps
- Foster a collaborative learning culture through mentorship, code reviews, and exploration of new technologies
Requirements:
- BS or advanced degree in Computer Science or related field, or 4 years of equivalent professional experience
- 12–15 years of software development experience working on server-side applications, specifically API servers, third-party integrations, and data processing
- Expertise in a compiled language (Go, Java, or Kotlin) required
- Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL) including schema design, SQL tuning, and database monitoring required
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing scalable APIs with solid understanding of design patterns, database design, and testing best practices
- Working knowledge of GraphQL APIs, CI/CD pipelines, AWS platform, Docker, and Kubernetes a plus
- Experience at a high-growth startup a plus
