Astronomer is the company behind Astro, a unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow, trusted by over 800 leading enterprises. The Platform Engineering team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the R&D organization and work on production infrastructure at scale.
In this role, you will:
- Make high-quality, data-driven decisions on how to build the next generation of the production platform and deliver results in a high-scale PaaS environment.
- Own and build testing, build, and deployment processes for code in a cloud-native environment, ensuring predictable, safe, and reliable delivery while the system evolves.
- Collaborate across the company on designing production systems, setting standards, and making technology choices for new and existing products.
- Work on a small but growing Platform/Reliability practice, reporting directly to the VP of Reliability, with direct involvement in decision-making on priorities and execution.
- Participate in incident management and help determine sensible practices as the platform scales.
- Create and maintain comprehensive internal documentation for systems and processes.
- Be at the forefront of how the Platform Engineering team works together, with a focus on ownership, accountability, and operational excellence.
You will directly influence how global organizations orchestrate data pipelines at scale, making them faster, more reliable, and easier to manage.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong experience in Non-Abstract Systems design and implementation.
- Strong proficiency in Python and Golang with in-depth Kubernetes experience (CKA or equivalent or greater).
- Experience with observability principles and technologies, including SLI/SLO definition and tracking.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in globally distributed teams.
- Passion for reliability and operational excellence; low tolerance for toil.
- Ability to estimate scope accurately and coordinate with stakeholders to address risks and ensure successful delivery.
- Experience with software development best practices: code review, testing, CI/CD, version control, automation, and debugging.
- Proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues, with focus on ownership and accountability.
BONUS:
- SaaS/PaaS product experience across multiple cloud providers.
- Familiarity with: CircleCI, Chronosphere (Prometheus), Splunk, Bazel, Istio, Playwright, Karpenter, GitHub Actions.
- Deep knowledge of AWS, GCP, and Azure internals.
- On-call rotation experience (this role involves periodic on-call).
- Apache Airflow experience.
