Honeycomb is a Series D-funded observability platform serving companies like Slack, HelloFresh, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard. The Storage Team is the backbone of the platform, responsible for the performance, reliability, and scalability of storing and querying billions of events. As a Senior Software Engineer II on Storage, you will design and own the architecture powering correct and dependable query results across all Honeycomb product experiences, from Metrics to Triggers and SLOs.
In this role, you will:
- Design and implement high-quality solutions for query and data storage infrastructure, including query performance improvements, Retriever service evolution, and storage layer reliability enhancements.
- Scope and deliver complex projects independently, breaking down storage and querying problems into achievable steps, surfacing trade-offs, and collaborating with teammates as needed. You own projects end-to-end from design through production support.
- Collaborate with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to connect technical solutions to product needs, from problem discovery through delivery.
- Participate in on-call rotations, help define team KPIs and SLOs, and proactively reduce toil by addressing reliability challenges before they impact customers.
- Explore new technologies, data storage techniques, and query optimization strategies to maintain performance and reliability as Honeycomb scales.
- Model strong ownership through code reviews, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. You help teammates grow while keeping conversations focused on business value.
Honeycomb is a fully distributed company with a distributed-first culture. The company has scaled past 200 employees, was named to Forbes' America's Best Startups in 2022 and 2023, and values trust, autonomy, and accountability from day one.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Technical leadership in storage and querying systems. You have led the design of patterns and guidelines that improve performance and reliability.
- Expertise writing Go, with experience working on high-throughput or complex systems.
- Prior experience with database engineering is a plus, as is comfort with Kubernetes.
- Curiosity and experimentation mindset. You learn by digging in individually, in pairs, or as a team, and believe in learning from incidents.
- Focus on business outcomes. You tie technical decisions to customer and company impact.
- Strength in mentorship and teamwork. You guide engineers through code reviews and spread knowledge to prevent silos.
- Resilience in collaboration. You thrive in a senior-heavy team, giving and receiving feedback with grace.
- Deep debugging expertise. You are trusted to diagnose and resolve complex production issues across the stack.
- Ability to influence beyond your team by sharing knowledge and driving foundational work that benefits Honeycomb engineering.
