Honeycomb is a Series D-funded observability platform serving companies like Slack, HelloFresh, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard. The LLM Observability team builds the foundational infrastructure that makes AI workloads observable within Honeycomb's platform. This team defines how AI systems are represented in telemetry (spans, traces, token usage, cost, eval signals) and normalizes data from diverse ecosystems (LangChain, OpenLLMetry, Braintrust) into a consistent OpenTelemetry-based model. The infrastructure and data model owned by this team powers downstream AI observability experiences including cost analysis and anomaly detection. In this role, you will design, build, and deliver backend systems and APIs in Go, emphasizing clarity, maintainability, and backward compatibility. You'll architect solutions with proactive consideration of cost, scale, and risk. You'll contribute across the full stack—building both frontend (React/TypeScript) and backend features—while maintaining primary expertise in backend systems. You'll provide technical leadership by defining patterns and operational guidelines, planning and leading complex multi-team projects with external dependencies, and mentoring teammates. You'll rotate tech lead responsibilities with each feature to develop and grow these skills across the team. You'll collaborate within a product triad model alongside design and product partners from discovery through delivery, iterating based on user feedback. You'll contribute to technical and quarterly product roadmaps, connecting technical considerations to business outcomes. You'll participate in on-call rotations to support software in production, proactively addressing user pain points and balancing forward-looking feature work with production needs. Clear communication—written and verbal—is foundational; you'll mentor engineers, share knowledge, and delegate to help others grow and multiply your impact. Honeycomb is a fully distributed company with 200+ employees. The company was named to Forbes' America's Best Startups in 2022 and 2023. Benefits include generous equity, unlimited PTO, home office and internet stipends, full benefits coverage, up to 16 weeks paid parental leave, and an annual development allowance. REQUIREMENTS: - Deep experience designing, building, and maintaining backend systems; substantial expertise building APIs and backend services in Go (or similar languages) with strong opinions about API design, error handling, and developer experience - Professional experience delivering frontend features and contributing to full-stack software with React and TypeScript, though primary expertise should be in backend systems - Experience leading complex technical projects spanning multiple teams or systems, navigating external dependencies and uncertainty; ability to break down complex work, ship incrementally, and balance technical investment with business goals - Proactive ownership and autonomy; ability to identify problems, propose solutions, and own projects end-to-end from planning through deployment and ongoing maintenance; comfort tackling tech debt and debugging across the entire stack - Track record of making others better through mentoring engineers, leading technical design reviews, and raising the quality bar for a team or domain - Collaborative and flexible mindset; comfort working cross-functionally, pivoting priorities, and maintaining strong teamwork - Clear, thoughtful, and regular written and face-to-face communication skills with willingness to give and receive feedback - Interest in observability and production culture; experience supporting software in production with opinions about doing it well - Nice to have: proficiency with AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) or excitement about incorporating them into your workflow
