Scribd is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Frontend) to join the Discovery Applications team within the Machine Learning and Discovery Engineering Division. This role focuses on building customer-facing web experiences that power Scribd's search, recommendations, and generative AI features across Scribd and Everand products.
You will own frontend systems end-to-end, from design through long-term evolution, working in a full-stack capacity with deep collaboration across backend, ML engineering, product, and design teams. While the role is predominantly frontend-focused, you'll contribute to code strategy, architecture, implementation, delivery, and operation of systems. You'll advise on technical design, review code, participate in interviews, and mentor less experienced engineers.
The Discovery Applications team is dedicated to turning cutting-edge machine learning capabilities into intuitive, customer-facing features. You'll build user-facing experiences powered by ML and generative AI, considering testability, upgradeability, scalability, and observability throughout development. Strong systems thinking and a pragmatic approach to modernization—balancing ideal solutions with incremental, low-risk progress—are essential.
Scribd operates under a "Scribd Flex" model supporting flexible work arrangements with occasional in-person attendance required for collaboration and culture-building. The company values a culture of real, bold employees who debate and commit, with every team member empowered to take action and prioritize the customer.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of professional frontend software engineering experience
- Deep experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React
- Hands-on experience with Next.js or similar modern web frameworks
- Familiarity with Microfrontend architectures, monorepos, or shared frontend platforms
- Strong understanding of web performance, bundling, and optimization techniques
- Experience collaborating with backend and platform teams to define clean integration patterns
- Comfort operating in high-traffic, high-visibility environments with real user impact
- Ability to work in codebases with shared patterns and collaborate across teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication; thrives in remote, documentation-driven culture
- Highly collaborative approach to partnering with product, design, and backend teams
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience working with or migrating large, complex, or legacy frontend codebases
- Track record modernizing frontend systems in production (not just greenfield)
- Viewing frontend architecture as a product for other engineers
- Prioritizing performance, accessibility, SEO, quality, and observability as first-class concerns
- Investment in testing and quality practices for safe, repeatable large-scale migrations
- Comfort untangling complexity and leaving systems better than found
- Deep consideration of how technical decisions affect both developers and end users
