Wayve builds embodied AI that safely moves real vehicles and the ecosystem for autonomous systems at scale. You'll join the Portal team as a Senior Software Engineer, Data, working on the Data Transfer Hub—a mission-critical infrastructure component designed to handle petabytes of sensor data per day from global partners including Uber, Stellantis, and Nissan. In this role, you'll build and operate large-scale data transfer pipelines for video, LiDAR, and sensor data from partners worldwide. You'll contribute to the technical design of the Data Transfer Hub, making pragmatic trade-offs across UX, reliability, throughput, cost, partner constraints, observability, and operational support. The work involves designing and implementing a globally distributed hub-and-spoke data exchange system using Flyte for workflow orchestration, Kafka/event-driven patterns for lifecycle tracing, and Azure for storage and transfer infrastructure. Key responsibilities include building parallelized, distributed data transfer pipelines; implementing infrastructure-as-code in Terraform and pipeline logic in Python; establishing reliable operational foundations with retry strategies, backfills, data integrity checks, lifecycle/state tracking, dashboards, and alerting; working on cloud-to-cloud and cross-cloud networking solutions; participating in on-call rotations once established; and collaborating with product, commercial, and partner-facing teams to deliver solutions that solve real customer problems in a fast-changing environment. Wayve operates a hybrid model combining office time in London with remote work. The company is still defining how it works, and this role suits people who want real ownership and the opportunity to shape processes and culture. REQUIREMENTS Essential: - Proven experience building and operating large-scale data transfer, ingestion, or data processing pipelines at multi-TB or PB scale - Strong software engineering skills and experience delivering & maintaining production systems - Experience with workflow orchestration for parallelized jobs (Flyte preferred; Airflow, Prefect, or similar acceptable) - Experience building reliable, observable data systems including retry strategies, backfills, data integrity checks, lifecycle/state tracking, and operational alerting - Strong cloud platform skills with Azure preferred; AWS or GCP experience is a plus - Proficiency in Python and Terraform - Experience with blob/object storage, large-scale file movement, networking, or cloud-to-cloud data transfer - Product mindset: think about the customer and build solutions that fix real problems - Comfort working in fast-changing environments with evolving requirements - Strong sense of ownership: take responsibility for outcomes, communicate clearly, help the team move quickly Desirable: - Experience working with external data partners or customer-facing technical integrations - Background in autonomous vehicles, robotics, geospatial data, video processing, or other data-intensive domains - Experience with Kafka or other event-driven systems for transfer observability and lifecycle tracking - Experience building dashboards to communicate transfer job status - Multi-cloud experience across Azure, AWS, and/or GCP - Experience improving cost efficiency, throughput, or reliability of large-scale cloud data systems
