As a Senior Software Engineer in Barcelona, you will own the complete lifecycle of features—from understanding customer pain points with the product team, through design documents, coding, deployment, and measuring impact. You'll work in cross-functional squads with genuine autonomy and a shared sense of purpose, contributing to both quarterly goals and long-term technical vision.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shaping the bigger picture by refining what to build and why, going beyond technical solutions to focus on the underlying problem
- Architecting scalable, evolvable systems and data models that account for performance, failure isolation, and long-term maintenance
- Writing design documents that lay the foundation for significant platform changes
- Acting as a guardian of technical quality, proactively managing technical debt and ensuring investment aligns with impact
- Leading across boundaries by communicating complex ideas across multiple teams, coordinating cross-squad initiatives, and driving alignment
- Mentoring less experienced colleagues through direct mentorship, thoughtful feedback, and modeling engineering excellence
- Defining and upholding engineering standards including CI/CD optimizations, testing strategies, and coding practices
- Establishing frontend architecture patterns (state management, performance budgets, comprehensive E2E testing)
- Engineering sophisticated backend solutions (API versioning, caching strategies, complex data migrations)
- Leading observability and SRE practices, defining SLOs, managing incident responses, and conducting blameless post-mortems
- Overseeing operational security including secrets hygiene and dependency risk management
- Leveraging AI-augmented workflows, including agentic coding and AI-powered code reviews
Perk prioritizes autonomy and pragmatism, measuring engineering excellence by the reliability and simplicity of systems built. AI is embedded throughout the workflow—Notion, Jira, GitHub, and Slack are AI-connected to accelerate onboarding and daily work. The company expects candidates to use AI tools in coding interviews; the bar is understanding your code and owning what you produce.
The role requires being based within commuting distance of the Barcelona office, with an in-person-first approach of 3 days per week. Perk can assist with relocation from anywhere in the world; English is the official office language.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Product leadership: translating complex business goals into technical roadmaps; de-risking ambiguous projects through spikes and prototyping
- System architecture expertise with focus on scalability, performance, and maintainability
- Technical standards definition and enforcement across the stack
- Frontend strategy including state management, performance budgets, and comprehensive testing (E2E/Cypress)
- Backend excellence with API versioning, caching, and complex data migration experience
- Operational maturity in observability, SRE practices, SLO definition, and incident management
- Security and risk oversight including secrets hygiene and dependency management
- Mentorship and influence across the engineering organization
- Cross-functional coordination and stakeholder alignment
- Experience with or strong interest in modern AI-augmented development workflows and agentic coding
