Pebl is an AI-powered Global Work Platform that enables companies to hire, pay, and manage employees across 185+ countries. The company is building Alfie, a conversational AI assistant that rethinks what AI-native software can do.
You will own full-stack features for Alfie end-to-end: designing and building backend microservices (TypeScript/Python, Postgres, AWS, Kubernetes), frontend interfaces (React/TypeScript with conversational and streaming UIs), and the AI/agent logic that powers the assistant. This is not a narrow backend or frontend role—you'll shape both the technical architecture and the user experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and ship full-stack features with ownership from data model through user interface
- Build and operate backend services in TypeScript or Python on Postgres and AWS (Kubernetes-deployed), with clean APIs supporting agentic workflows
- Build React/TypeScript frontends with conversational interfaces and strong product taste for AI-driven UX
- Apply hands-on LLM and agentic systems experience (prompt design, tool calling, multi-step reasoning, evaluation) to shape assistant behavior and user-facing outcomes
- Design for AI failure modes: recovery paths, human-in-the-loop handoffs, uncertainty handling
- Build observability and evaluation into AI systems for production insights and evidence-driven improvements
- Troubleshoot end-to-end issues across backend, frontend, and AI-specific failure modes
- Lead by example in clean, tested, maintainable code; mentor junior engineers and contribute to design/code reviews
- Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to deliver features
Requirements:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with real depth in both backend and frontend
- Proficiency in TypeScript or Python; strong experience building database-backed services on Postgres or similar relational databases (schema design, query optimization)
- Strong command of modern frontend (React/TypeScript), including integration with backend services, APIs, and real-time/streaming data
- 1+ years of hands-on experience building LLM-powered or agentic products (not just API calls, but designing agent reasoning, tool use, and control handoff)
- Experience shipping a conversational AI interface (chatbot, copilot, or assistant) that real end users interact with; ability to discuss user experience during failures or confusion
- Solid understanding of LLM design patterns, prompt engineering, and observability/instrumentation for agentic systems
- Experience building and deploying services in containerized, Kubernetes-based environments (or comparable orchestration) and comfort with AWS
- Solid CS fundamentals and system design instincts; ability to reason about data structures, APIs, and architecture at scale
- Track record of building products beyond standard CRUD apps and dashboards—something with craft, polish, or distinctive UX
- Lean mindset focused on delivering customer value by minimizing waste and iterating quickly on feedback
- Comfort working collaboratively in remote, fast-paced environments with excitement for rapidly evolving AI-native software space
