Asana is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its AI organization in Vancouver. The company is positioning itself as a human-agent operating system, expanding its AI Suite to enable end-to-end intelligent orchestration for customers. You will work across one of several key AI engineering teams, potentially focusing on core agentic runtime architecture, high-throughput evaluation and safety infrastructure, or customer-facing builders and canvas surfaces that coordinate humans and AI agents.
In this role, you will drive technical design, architecture, and end-to-end delivery of medium-to-large projects across Asana's AI roadmap while guiding and collaborating with multiple engineers. You'll design robust, extensible, and performant systems supporting agentic execution, prompt-driven automation, model orchestration, and enterprise-grade data boundaries. You'll solve complex technical problems by balancing technical debt, developer velocity, execution risk, and business goals. You'll anticipate customer and architectural risks early, breaking down ambiguous product visions into clear engineering milestones and actionable tasks.
You'll champion technical excellence by writing high-leverage design docs, running meaningful retrospectives, establishing testing norms, and mentoring engineers across levels. You'll partner closely with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Product Designers, and Data Scientists to define requirements, clarify trade-offs, and align technical direction with Asana's broader product strategy. You'll demonstrate deep empathy for end-user experience, understanding how backend architecture and model behaviors directly affect user trust, interface latency, and workflow reliability.
The role is based in Asana's Vancouver office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. Standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most employees have the option to work from home on Wednesdays, with Friday flexibility depending on work type and team partnerships.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and maintaining production distributed systems, microservices, or complex full-stack architectures
- Demonstrated track record of technical leadership across multiple services or codebases
- Practical experience or deep interest in LLMs, agentic patterns, evaluation pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or real-time streaming infrastructure
- Proven ability to author comprehensive technical design docs and evaluate trade-offs (latency, cost, determinism, maintainability)
- Track record of acting as a Tech Lead or Area of Responsibility (AoR) owner, successfully driving multi-contributor projects from ambiguity to delivery while navigating cross-team dependencies
- Passion for mentoring and coaching fellow engineers, providing actionable code and design feedback, and establishing long-term engineering best practices
- Curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making
