Salary: USD 115,000 - 215,000 / annual
Formlabs is seeking a Senior Materials Scientist to lead the development of world-class SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) materials for 3D printing. The company's technology powers innovation across 50,000+ industry leaders including Apple, Google, Tesla, and NASA.
In this role, you will:
- Build SLS materials from initial lab exploration through validation and commercialization
- Lead research that pushes the boundaries of SLS material performance and translates discoveries into next-generation solutions
- Partner with product, hardware, and software teams to iterate and improve material performance based on customer feedback
- Develop methodologies to evaluate material formulations in coordination with SLS print systems, balancing material chemistry, thermal dynamics, and printing parameters
You will work autonomously, take initiative to learn new skills, and drive projects from concept to market. The role emphasizes hands-on experimentation, rigorous data-driven optimization, and strong documentation practices.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience bringing a new material to market from ideation to production
- Solid understanding of materials science fundamentals and polymer product development
- Hands-on experience in thermoplastic engineering
- Passion for testing and troubleshooting; willingness to iterate extensively
- Ability to design and conduct rigorous experiments to optimize materials
- Autonomous work style with initiative to learn new skills
- Understanding of good documentation practices
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field
BONUS SKILLS:
- Experience developing materials for 3D printing (SLA/DLP or SLS)
- 3D CAD modeling
- Programming skills (Python, Matlab, SQL, etc.)
