Valar Atomics is a Series A advanced nuclear energy company building scalable, factory-made nuclear systems for industrial heat, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company has already designed, built, commissioned, and operated a DOE-authorized research reactor outside the national laboratory system within three years of founding.
The Instrumentation & Controls Engineering team designs systems that monitor, automate, and protect Valar's facilities and reactor technologies. As a Senior OT Engineer, you will own defined implementation and testing objectives through planning, execution, troubleshooting, and verified delivery. You will take responsibility for assigned systems, make sound decisions within established standards, and resolve interface issues with other engineers.
OT Engineering delivers power and rack infrastructure, compute, networks, identity, security (physical and cyber), operational data, and industrial software platforms (FactoryTalk). Your scope covers backend deployment, configuration, integration, and recovery of FactoryTalk systems. PLC programming and controls-code development are outside this role.
Key responsibilities include: turning defined objectives into practical implementation or test plans covering prerequisites, equipment, dependencies, tests, and recovery steps; independently implementing and operating systems or preparing, executing, and diagnosing system tests; diagnosing difficult faults using measurements, logs, test results, and system behavior; planning and executing commissioning, failure, and recovery tests with clear acceptance criteria; resolving integration issues with other engineers and identifying when requirements or designs need revision; completing delivery with accurate configurations, executable procedures, test evidence, and usable handoff records; and traveling to the Torrance facility approximately 15% of the time.
You will be successful if you are highly organized with disciplined task tracking and accurate documentation; capable of independent progress from a defined objective to a working, verified result with timely escalation of design or scope decisions; possess strong depth in one or more disciplines with enough interface awareness to work effectively with other specialists; and demonstrate persistent troubleshooting that follows evidence and verifies results.
The role offers a high-impact startup environment with significant ownership and autonomy, direct collaboration with experienced operators and engineers, and opportunities for rapid career growth. Valar provides competitive base salary, equity ownership, comprehensive medical benefits, unlimited PTO, free daily lunch and dinner onsite, a generous PPE stipend, and the opportunity to help build transformative energy technology from the ground up.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in OT systems, industrial controls, or related infrastructure engineering
- Demonstrated expertise in at least two of: power distribution and UPS systems; rack and compute infrastructure; network design and troubleshooting; identity and access management; cyber-physical security; FactoryTalk deployment and operations; or operational data systems (historians, databases, interfaces)
- Proficiency in log and packet analysis: ability to correlate logs and packets across systems, establish causes, and verify corrective actions
- Experience deploying and operating historians, databases, or interfaces; diagnosing quality failures and verifying retention, buffering, access, and recovery
- Ability to travel to Orangeville, UT facility approximately 15% of the time
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder)
