BETA Technologies is revolutionizing electric aviation through advanced aircraft design and engineering. This Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role provides senior technical ownership for the architecture and mechanical design of narrowbody high-lift devices (flaps and slats) for electric aircraft.
You will lead the development of flap and slat mechanisms, kinematics, actuation, installation, and interface design from concept through preliminary and detailed sizing. Key responsibilities include:
• Lead architecture and design trades for high-lift devices, support structures, tracks, hinges, linkages, drive systems, actuation, indication, locking, and installation
• Develop kinematic models, packaging studies, mechanism layouts, load paths, interface definitions, and 3D CAD designs
• Translate aerodynamic requirements, loads, control-system needs, safety objectives, maintainability, and manufacturing constraints into mechanical design requirements
• Own mechanical integration across wing, movable surfaces, actuation, hydraulics/electromechanical systems, flight controls, structure, and test provisions
• Identify failure modes, single-point vulnerabilities, jamming risks, tolerance sensitivities, rigging needs, and inspection/maintenance access early in design
• Coordinate with High-Lift Aerodynamics, Loads, Structures, Stress, Systems Integration, Flight Controls, Safety, Manufacturing, Test, and suppliers
• Guide and mentor a Mechanical Design Engineer, review technical work, and communicate decisions, assumptions, interfaces, and risks
The role is based onsite at South Burlington, VT or Raleigh, NC, with hybrid arrangements possible for remote candidates requiring monthly in-person visits to South Burlington.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
• 7+ years of aerospace mechanical design, mechanism design, actuation, or aircraft installation experience
• Strong proficiency with CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, or comparable CAD and product-definition environment
• Demonstrated experience with kinematics, bearings, joints, fasteners, tolerances, interfaces, and mechanical load paths
• Experience leading complex mechanical hardware from concept through build and test
• Must be a US Person
Desired Qualifications:
• Commercial-aircraft flap, slat, control-surface, landing-gear, door, actuation, or other safety-critical mechanism experience
• Experience with system safety, jam analysis, fatigue, wear, lubrication, rigging, maintainability, or certification planning
• Experience with hydraulic or electromechanical actuation and supplier technical leadership
