Graphcore is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the Applied AI team, working on scaling state-of-the-art AI models across thousands of accelerators. This role sits at the intersection of novel hardware, software infrastructure, and cutting-edge AI applications.
You will develop and optimize machine learning models for Graphcore's specialized hardware, with a focus on performance, accuracy, and scalability across large distributed systems. The role involves benchmarking and profiling ML models to identify bottlenecks, developing deep understanding of the software stack to optimize kernel implementations, and collaborating with Research, Software, and Product teams to define and test next-generation AI hardware.
Key responsibilities include:
- Implementing and training state-of-the-art ML models optimized for performance and scalability across systems with thousands of accelerators
- Benchmarking and profiling models to identify performance bottlenecks
- Developing expertise across the software stack to optimize kernel implementations
- Testing and evaluating new internal software releases, providing feedback to engineering teams, making code fixes, and conducting code reviews
- Designing and conducting experiments on novel AI methods and evaluating results
- Engaging with the AI community and staying current with latest developments
The Applied AI team acts as a proxy for customers, understanding the latest AI models, applications, and software alongside Graphcore's hardware and software stack. Work spans from low-level kernel development for novel hardware through implementing and scaling research-level algorithms for the latest AI models. You'll collaborate with the Research team on novel ideas in efficient compute, model scaling, and distributed training/inference across multiple modalities and applications.

The role offers flexibility through a hybrid working model from any of the UK offices (Bristol, London, or Cambridge). The posting indicates multiple opportunities are available at Senior, Staff, and Principal levels.
REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proficiency in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX
- Strong Python or C++ software development skills
- Expertise in hardware-accelerated deep learning from model training through optimization and evaluation
- Capability to design, execute, and report results from ML experiments
- Experience with distributed training and inference of large-scale models
- Familiarity with performance profiling and optimization techniques
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
