Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for enterprise customers including Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. The company operates with over 100 engineering teams and maintains a strong focus on platform engineering and infrastructure.
You will join the Application Services team within Platform Engineering, which develops foundational, business-agnostic capabilities used across Adyen's engineering organization. The team focuses on critical infrastructure components including secret management, service discovery, and feature flagging. Current initiatives include migrating workloads from Nomad to Kubernetes and modernizing legacy technologies toward contemporary application runtimes and frameworks.
As a Senior Java Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of foundational services used by engineering teams across the company. You will drive complex, cross-team initiatives from problem discovery through production adoption, partnering with product managers and engineers to identify shared platform needs and define priorities. Key responsibilities include designing and evolving APIs with attention to compatibility and migration strategies, architecting resilient solutions spanning multiple data centers, and owning deployment, observability, operation, and continuous improvement of live services.
You will mentor engineers within the team, raise technical standards, and gather developer feedback to improve the reliability, usability, and adoption of platform services. This role requires leading ambiguous technical initiatives involving multiple teams and designing safe adoption strategies that allow teams to modernize without disrupting business-critical services.
Required qualifications include 7+ years of backend software development experience, proficiency in Java with strong JVM understanding, experience with Postgres or similar relational databases, and hands-on experience with CI/CD, observability, performance analysis, and incident response. You must demonstrate proven experience designing and operating distributed systems, ability to lead cross-team technical initiatives, and willingness to operate, deploy, and troubleshoot applications in live production environments.
Bonus qualifications include experience with large-scale, multi-region, or mission-critical systems; knowledge of authentication, authorization, encryption, and security practices; experience building internal platforms focused on developer autonomy; and experience leading platform migrations or driving adoption across large engineering organizations.
