Salary: USD 111,300 - 176,720 / annual
Divergent 3D is building advanced manufacturing systems for automotive OEMs and aerospace/defense companies. As Senior Equipment Engineer - Mechanical, you will be a subject matter expert on the mechanical systems of production Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) equipment, owning technical issues and projects across motion, recoating, build platform systems, inert gas flow and filtration, cooling and thermal management, and powder handling.
You will work across Equipment Engineering, Service, Operations, Quality, and Development Engineering teams, mentoring technicians and peers while setting technical approaches and standards for recurring challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
**Support Service and Operations:** Improve work instructions and write new ones to enable Service team autonomy. Act as a technical resource for operators and Service per SLA agreements, supporting novel issues beyond existing procedures. Support preventative maintenance improvements and mentor technicians so knowledge from difficult investigations becomes systematized.
**Own Equipment Reliability and Resolve Fleet Problems:** Take technical ownership of assigned equipment after qualification, tracking performance against safety, quality, delivery, and cost baselines. Troubleshoot mechanical issues on L-PBF equipment including recoater and build platform performance, motion and alignment, wear and tolerance stack-up, gas flow and filtration, cooling, and powder handling. Mine existing datasets (machine process data and downstream printed part data) to discover root causes. Contribute to fleet-wide trend and reliability data. Initiate and complete RCCAs end-to-end: identify issues, set short-term containment, and drive long-term corrective action. Engage with Development Engineering to provide regular input on machine reliability and recommend targeted fixes. Drive cost reduction through equipment optimization.
**Change and Configuration Management:** Determine when and where specific changes to assets are made, applying team guidance on formal change control. Support improvements to change approval and configuration control processes. Document lessons learned for standardization across the fleet and future factories.
**Additional Responsibilities:** Set technical approach for assigned projects and give data-backed recommendations on tradeoffs. Support installation, commissioning, FAT/SAT, qualification, and production readiness for new equipment and factory expansion. Support quality compliance (AS9100, AMS, PPAP) and analysis of equipment-related quality issues. Provide input on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Reliability (DFR) for next-generation machines.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
- 6+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments
- Experience owning the sustaining performance of production equipment and supporting it through launch or ramp
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting skill on production equipment (motion, fluid, gas, or thermal systems), with working knowledge of electrical and controls systems sufficient to troubleshoot alongside electrical and controls engineers
- Demonstrated ability to lead root cause investigations using structured methodologies (RCCA, 5 Whys, Fishbone, Fault Tree) on recurring or ambiguous problems, and to verify that corrective actions held
- Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, including finding problems in large datasets and not only responding to reported failures
- Ability to work and influence across engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and service teams without direct authority, and to communicate clearly with people at very different levels of technical depth
- Experience mentoring or training other engineers or technicians
- Ability to lawfully access information and technology subject to US export controls
**Preferred Qualifications:**
- Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or other metal additive manufacturing technologies
- Experience with mechanical subsystems common to L-PBF equipment (recoating, powder handling, precision motion and alignment, inert gas flow and filtration, chillers and thermal management, vacuum and pressure systems)
- Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and CAD (SolidWorks), and reading mechanical drawings and P&IDs
- Experience contributing to fleet-level reliability, trending, or performance programs (OEE, MTBF/MTTR, failure-mode tracking) across multiple machines or sites
- Experience writing or standardizing work instructions that enabled Service or Operations teams to work more independently
- Experience with configuration management or engineering change processes
- Experience working with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics (SQL, Python, or similar tools)
- Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration
- Experience supporting capital equipment installation, commissioning, or factory expansion
- Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems
