Divergent 3D is seeking a Senior Equipment Engineer - Electrical to support the transition of next-generation Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) production equipment from development into high-volume manufacturing for aerospace and automotive applications. This is a hands-on role focused on ensuring production equipment is stable, reliable, scalable, and capable of delivering world-class safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance.
As Subject Matter Expert on electrical systems of production L-PBF equipment, you will own technical issues and projects on assigned equipment, set approaches and standards for recurring technical challenges, and work across Equipment Engineering, Service, Operations, Quality, and Development Engineering. You will mentor technicians and peers.
Key responsibilities include:
**Support Service and Operations:** Improve existing work instructions and write new ones to enable Service team autonomy for day-to-day issues. Act as a technical resource for operators and Service, including formal SLA support for novel issues. Support preventative maintenance improvements based on equipment performance. Mentor technicians and operators so knowledge from difficult investigations moves into the system.
**Own Equipment Reliability and Resolve Fleet Problems:** Take technical ownership of assigned equipment after qualification and track performance against safety, quality, delivery, and cost baselines. Troubleshoot electrical issues on L-PBF equipment including power distribution, high-power subsystems, control circuits, sensors and instrumentation, wiring and harnesses, drives and motors, and safety interlocks. Mine existing datasets (machine process data and downstream printed part data) to discover issues. Contribute to trend and reliability data across the fleet. Initiate and complete RCCAs end-to-end: identify issues, set short-term containment, and drive long-term corrective action. Engage with Development Engineering to provide regular input on machine reliability and recommend targeted fixes. Drive cost reduction through equipment optimization.
**Change and Configuration Management:** Help determine when and where specific changes to assets are made. Support improvements to change approval and configuration control processes. Document lessons learned for standardization across the fleet and future factories.
You will work alongside senior equipment engineers to stabilize new machines, improve reliability, and build standards that carry the fleet as it scales. Success requires strong troubleshooting skills, independent technical judgment, and the drive to grow into broader fleet-level ownership.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
- 6+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments
- Experience owning the sustaining performance of production equipment and supporting it through launch or ramp
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skill on production equipment (power, control circuits, sensors, instrumentation), including reading schematics and one-line diagrams, with working knowledge of mechanical systems
- Demonstrated ability to lead root cause investigations using structured methodologies (RCCA, 5 Whys, Fishbone, Fault Tree) on recurring or ambiguous problems, and to verify corrective actions held
- Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, including finding problems in large datasets
- Ability to work and influence across engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and service teams without direct authority, and to communicate clearly with people at very different technical levels
- Experience mentoring or training other engineers or technicians
- Ability to lawfully access information and technology subject to US export controls
**Preferred Qualifications:**
- Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or other metal additive manufacturing technologies
- Experience with electrical subsystems common to L-PBF equipment (laser, high-power systems, heaters, motion drives, sensors/DAQ, safety interlocks)
- Experience with electrical safety practices (NFPA 70E, LOTO)
- Experience contributing to fleet-level reliability, trending, or performance programs (OEE, MTBF/MTTR, failure-mode tracking) across multiple machines or sites
- Experience writing or standardizing work instructions that enabled Service or Operations teams to work more independently
- Experience with configuration management or engineering change processes
- Experience with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics (SQL, Python, or similar)
- Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration
- Experience supporting capital equipment installation, commissioning, or factory expansion
- Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems
