Duolingo is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact product engineering team focused on user growth and engagement. This role offers three distinct team options: Growth (improving learner habit formation and long-term engagement), Language Learning (managing a 7-person team building the core short-form learning experience), or Monetization (driving subscriptions, ads, and in-app purchases).
You will co-lead a cross-functional team with product management partners, aligning on strategy, priorities, and success metrics. Key responsibilities include driving project execution from specification through implementation and ongoing ownership, ensuring infrastructure reliability and scalability. You'll use data and rapid experimentation to inform decisions, designing A/B tests and translating insights into product improvements that measurably impact KPIs.
People leadership is central: you'll attract, grow, and retain diverse engineering talent through clear expectations, coaching, and career development while building a healthy, inclusive team culture. You'll set engineering quality standards balancing speed and long-term maintainability, proactively managing technical debt and operational excellence. Collaboration across product, design, research, and other engineering teams is essential to deliver user experiences that serve learner needs while driving business metrics.
Required qualifications include demonstrated experience leading and building software engineering teams with proven ability to hire, develop, and retain talent. You need a track record of shipping multi-engineer, multi-week projects with measurable business impact. Strong product instincts and comfort in experimental, data-driven environments are essential, along with excellent communication and stakeholder management across functions. Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture decisions and mentor engineers is required. Candidates must be able to work from or relocate to Pittsburgh, PA or New York, NY.
