Rainmaker is building integrated systems to increase freshwater availability through modernized cloud-seeding technology, combining weather-resistant unmanned aerial systems (UAS), radar, satellite observations, numerical weather prediction, and novel sensing systems. The company operates at the intersection of climate tech and hardware innovation, with a mission to make Earth more habitable.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will lead the design and development of complex electrical systems for Rainmaker's hardware platforms. Your responsibilities include:
**Core Responsibilities:**
- Lead architecture and design of complex electrical systems for hardware platforms, defining system-level requirements, interface specifications, and integration strategies
- Design and build functional prototypes for hardware subsystems, iterating rapidly based on test feedback and mission requirements
- Create schematics and PCB layouts for power distribution, sensor interfaces, payload controllers, and communication modules using Altium
- Assemble, debug, and validate new PCBs; develop test procedures and fixtures to verify functionality and reliability under flight conditions
- Write technical documentation and prepare fabrication and assembly data for manufacturers
- Mentor engineers and lead technical reviews
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, software engineers, research teams, and manufacturing partners
The role offers the opportunity to work on systems that directly impact operational deployment, in a fast-paced, innovative environment where your work makes tangible difference.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated technical ability with 6+ years of industry work in electronics
- 4+ years of professional PCB design experience with Altium (or equivalent), including digital, mixed-signal, and analog front-end designs
- Proven track record leading hardware designs from concept through manufacturing, including DFM/DFT and direct contract manufacturer engagement
- Deep experience with embedded platforms and microcontrollers (Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, STM32, ESP32, RP2040)
- Experience with high-speed digital design, power integrity, signal integrity, and EMI/EMC considerations
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical reviews
- Embedded programming experience (C++, C, Rust, or Python), including board bring-up, debugging, and low-level driver development for sensors and communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN)
- Real-time control loop experience
**Preferred/Differentiating Experience:**
- PCB and electrical systems design for 10kW+ loads
- UAV electrical systems brought from concept through flight test and production
- Power electronics design (BLDC motor controllers, ESCs, battery management systems)
- Flight controller familiarity (Pixhawk, ArduPilot, custom autopilot hardware)
- Lithium polymer, lithium-ion, and solid-state battery integration and safety
- RF systems knowledge (datalinks, telemetry radios, SATCOM, antenna integration)
