Tripadvisor is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead experimentation and measurement strategy across product teams. In this role, you will own the experimentation framework for your domain, from question framing through decision-making and review. Your impact will come primarily from improving how product and engineering teams experiment—developing the metrics, guidance, tooling, and protocols that enable them to move quickly without sacrificing rigor.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning experimentation and measurement strategy for your domain
- Providing guidance, tooling, and protocols that improve partner teams' experimentation velocity
- Leading the design of complex experiments where standard A/B testing is insufficient (low-traffic surfaces, user interference, long-horizon outcomes, non-randomizable changes)
- Going beyond "did it work" to understand why it worked and whether it generalizes across users, markets, and time
- Assessing how product decisions affect platform health and growth, raising concerns when short-term wins carry longer-term costs
- Defining and operationalizing metric frameworks, including guardrails and proxies for slow-to-observe outcomes
- Improving measurement sensitivity through metric design, variance reduction, and better exposure definition
- Standardizing recurring analytical and experimentation processes using automation and AI where appropriate
- Influencing roadmap and prioritization through evidence
- Raising technical quality by reviewing experiment designs, analyses, and mentoring junior data scientists
You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data Platform, and other central functions, often without direct authority, to drive outcomes across the organization.
Requirements:
- Extensive experience in data science or similar quantitative role with proven track record supporting and influencing a product organization
- Authoritative command of experimentation in all forms: experimental design, variance reduction, causal inference, bandits, Bayesian methods; ability to develop and validate methodology, not just apply it
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL
- Deep, hands-on experience with statistical modeling, quasi-experimentation, multi-arm bandits, and machine learning techniques (regression, classification, clustering)
- Demonstrated ability to define, implement, and operationalize product and feature-level metrics from scratch
- Proven ability to improve how other teams work through guidance, tooling, and protocols—increasing both speed and quality of experimentation
- Ability to critically assess how product decisions affect platform health and growth over time
- Experience standardizing processes, frameworks, or methods across multiple teams, including use of AI and automation
- Proven ability to build strong relationships and drive outcomes across functions without direct authority
- Exceptional ability to explain measurement, method, and uncertainty clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or related quantitative field
Desirable experience:
- Experimentation in a marketplace with user interference and shared supply complications
- Advanced variance reduction techniques and approaches for infrequent or heavy-tailed metrics
- Building or validating proxy metrics for long-horizon outcomes
- Bayesian approaches for low-traffic surfaces or pooling evidence across small markets
- SaaS experimentation tools (Statsig, Eppo, GrowthBook) or in-house platforms
- High-scale marketplace, e-commerce, or travel platform experience with seasonality and long purchase cycles
- Improving experimentation practice at team or organizational level through frameworks, tooling, or enablement
- Applying AI or LLM capabilities to improve analytical throughput and experimentation quality
