Formlabs is seeking a Senior Build Engineer to own quality and performance infrastructure for PreForm, the company's flagship 3D printing software used by over 50,000 industry leaders including Apple, Google, Tesla, and NASA.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
**Performance Regression Detection**: Implement per-PR and nightly measurement of key performance indicators (startup time, upload speed, print generation, crash rate) in CI with automated alerting on regressions. This serves as the enforcement mechanism for PreForm's performance initiatives.
**System Test Re-architecture**: Rebuild the system test layer to drive end-to-end scenarios headlessly through PreForm Server, aligning with the API team to improve test coverage and reliability.
**Customer-File Corpus Testing**: Build and own a pipeline that runs large batches of real customer models through slicing and support generation, diffing results against baselines to catch regressions on actual customer geometry at scale beyond manual testing capabilities.
**Crash Intelligence**: Own Sentry triage, trending, and root-cause attribution. Build crash-reproduction harnesses to enable engineers to fix issues rather than spend time investigating.
**Test Infrastructure Stewardship**: Manage print regression baselines, CI flake, test runtimes, and golden-file management as a product rather than a tax on feature engineers.
You are a mid-to-senior individual contributor who can define test strategy independently while remaining hands-on in implementation. You have genuine IC appetite and will work autonomously on this critical infrastructure.
**Requirements:**
- C++ proficiency: able to write integration and system tests against PreForm internals and understand mesh operations, print file generation, and slicing output
- Python for tooling and harnesses: corpus pipelines, API-driven test drivers, result diffing and reporting
- CI and automation depth: Jenkins, test parallelization, flake management, baseline/golden-file testing strategies
- Observability instinct: Sentry, Amplitude, crash and performance dashboards; treats release health as a data question
- Desktop application testing experience (strong plus): GUI automation on Windows/macOS using Squish or Qt Test-based harnesses
- Seniority: mid-to-senior IC level
