Vizzia is building video surveillance and enforcement products for public sector clients across Europe. The company currently serves 250+ local authorities for waste management and is expanding into Safety with two new product lines: video-based traffic enforcement (launching in the UK) and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). Both products share a technical foundation: camera-equipped field units, an edge-to-cloud pipeline, and a SaaS platform for officers.
You will join as the second backend engineer on the Safety team, working alongside Jérémy Fornarino (Tech Lead). This is a full-stack backend role spanning edge and cloud infrastructure.
**Edge Backend Responsibilities:**
Build and operate services running on field units, including camera communication protocols (VAPIX, ISAPI, ONVIF), NX Witness integration, and local SQLite storage. Optimize CPU and RAM on resource-constrained devices and minimize 4G/5G bandwidth for the video chain. Debug production units via SSH and logs, and triage incidents across the fleet.
**Cloud Backend Responsibilities:**
Design and operate Hono APIs, event-driven workers on the LavinMQ message bus, and the Postgres/Drizzle data layer. Drive fleet orchestration from the cloud, guarantee resynchronization after network outages with zero data loss. Deploy and operate infrastructure using GitHub Actions, Helm, GKE, and Datadog monitoring.
**Product Ownership:**
Co-own both enforcement and ANPR projects from technical specification through production. Work with the PM and navigate legal constraints including evidential integrity, audit trails, retention/purge policies, and GDPR compliance. Architect the shared ingestion and edge-to-cloud layer both products converge on. Serve as one of two backend leads for production incidents.
**Architecture & Quality:**
Write Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), challenge and be challenged on technical decisions. Ship every module with tests, harden critical code paths (workers, pipelines), and rely on CI to catch regressions. Maintain monorepo conventions using moon, bun, and ten bounded contexts.
**Current Stack:**
TypeScript end-to-end, bun, Hono, Drizzle, Postgres (cloud), SQLite (edge), LavinMQ, moon monorepo, GKE, Datadog. Infrastructure and DevOps experience is welcome but not required.
**Requirements:**
- 4–8 years of backend experience, with a significant portion in SaaS
- Production TypeScript/Node.js experience; operational from day one
- Built and operated event-driven distributed systems in production (message buses, workers, idempotency, retries, structured logging, monitoring, incident response)
- Engineering degree or master's degree
- Full working proficiency in French and English
- Curiosity about systems, networks, and protocols; comfortable debugging unusual camera protocols and embedded issues
- AI coding tools integrated into your workflow with maintained code quality
**Bonus (not required):**
- Video and streaming experience (codecs, containers, VMS)
- Background in IoT, embedded systems, or robotics
- Domain knowledge can offset shorter SaaS track record
Vizzia values small-team ownership, few silos, picking up topics proactively, arguing technical choices, and genuine care for public sector problems.
