Salary: USD 190,000 - 275,000 / annual
Verkada is a physical AI platform company protecting organizations through integrated solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company serves 30,000+ customers (including 100+ Fortune 500 companies), operates 2+ million devices across 170+ countries, and has achieved a $5.8B valuation with $1B+ in annualized bookings.
The Device Platform team owns the backend infrastructure connecting Verkada's cloud to deployed hardware, managing device provisioning, OTA firmware rollouts, and the licensing layer that monetizes devices. The team currently operates at millions of devices and is scaling for the next order of magnitude while maintaining enterprise-grade consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will architect and ship major platform features end-to-end, such as the IoT core, device-metrics platform, or licensing ledger. You'll lead operational improvements that increase system robustness and reduce incident noise. A key part of the role is teaching as you ship—through design reviews, code reviews, written communication, and direct mentorship of teammates. You'll listen to other Verkada product teams and help shape the platform roadmap toward the company's long-term bets. The team is currently five senior engineers plus a new graduate, and is hiring to expand as the platform's reach grows.
The role emphasizes high-trust, inclusive culture with direct feedback, learning out loud, and collaborative improvement. You'll do as much cross-team alignment as deep systems design, holding a high bar on both execution and communication with peers.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of experience building backend services with consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees at scale
- Fluency in at least one server language (Python or Go preferred; Ruby or JavaScript/Node.js welcome)
- Skilled at listening to other engineering teams, shaping shared technical direction, and shipping changes they can build on without surprise
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required for FedRAMP compliance
- Five days per week onsite presence required
- No visa sponsorship available for this role
