1m is a fast-growing healthcare tech startup building a risk intelligence platform that empowers healthcare organizations to manage risks through automated, continuous research and actionable insights. The company serves 14 major US health systems and recently completed a Series A funding round in 2024.
We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our small, experienced team of developers, designers, and subject matter experts. This role focuses on designing and implementing data pipelines and backend systems that unlock 1m's deep quantitative expertise in risk-based financial planning for healthcare.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and build resilient data pipelines using Snowflake, Dagster, and AWS; strip out unnecessary complexity and own architectural decisions that scale with company growth.
- Transform varied client source data into structured, reliable outputs that power automation, building ETLs and orchestration to move data predictably.
- Implement comprehensive observability (logging, error reporting, dashboards) to identify and resolve issues early.
- Design repeatable, secure integrations with client financial systems (general ledger, cost accounting) that pull minimum necessary data with low client burden.
- Partner with security and compliance teams to maintain data security and ensure PHI never travels downstream of ingestion; enforce access controls.
- Contribute backend depth to the product beyond the data layer, collaborating on data models, services, and APIs.
- Communicate effectively across async channels through Slack updates, documentation, design diagrams, and code prototypes.
The tech stack includes Python + Django, TypeScript + React, PostgreSQL, and AWS. You will work 100% remotely with biannual in-person retreats.
Requirements:
- 7+ years building automated ETL pipelines
- Backend development using a Python framework (Django, Flask, FastAPI), REST, and SQL
- Strong experience with orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or AWS Step Functions)
- Knowledge of data warehousing patterns and tools; Snowflake experience is a plus
- Strong experience with one or more cloud providers (AWS preferred)
- Practical experience across data stores: object storage, key-value stores, and relational databases (especially Postgres)
- Authorization, authentication, and secure handling of data in regulated environments (healthcare or finance)
- Solid ops fundamentals, including CI/CD and containerized workflows
- Broad grounding in data structures, algorithms, and system design principles
- AI-forward development practices
