SumUp is a fintech platform that provides payment processing, business banking, lending, and invoicing tools for small businesses across Europe and beyond. The Cards squad owns the systems powering card issuing, lifecycle management, and transaction processing for millions of merchants daily.
You will own end-to-end delivery of backend services within the Cards EU domain, including observability, testing, and production support. You'll contribute to the technical roadmap through architectural discussions and propose solutions for complex distributed systems challenges. Your responsibilities include raising well-scoped pull requests, conducting thorough code reviews, maintaining high code quality and test coverage standards, and collaborating with adjacent squads and product managers on backlog refinement. You'll participate in incident reviews and on-call rotations, taking accountability for service reliability. You're also expected to apply and champion AI tooling to accelerate engineering workflows and help raise team AI literacy.
This is a senior individual contributor role with significant technical ownership and influence over complex, high-throughput systems. You'll work in a modern Sofia office with a global team of over 3,000 employees across 90+ nationalities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid, hands-on experience delivering production-ready backend services end-to-end, including testing, monitoring, and maintenance on a modern cloud-native stack
- Production experience with Kotlin and openness to work with additional languages such as Elixir, Java, or Golang
- Solid understanding of distributed systems, API design, data modelling, and relational databases
- Hands-on experience with containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD practices
- Ability to take ambiguous product problems, define technical approach, and lead implementation with minimal guidance
- Comfort working across teams and communicating clearly in written and spoken English in a professional setting
- Genuine curiosity about the product domain and ability to apply a backend lens during feature refinement
