Verkada is a cloud-managed physical security platform with an integrated, AI-powered suite including video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company serves 30,000+ customers (including 100+ Fortune 500 companies), has a $5.8B valuation, and more than $1 billion in annualized bookings. The Mobile Core team is transitioning to a platform model, providing underlying systems, frameworks, and components for product teams across the company. As a Senior Android Engineer on the Native Systems Layer, you will be a key technical contributor ensuring the mobile foundation is reliable, scalable, and easy for other teams to build upon. You will focus on specialized native challenges that web technology cannot solve, keeping the Verkada mobile experience fast, secure, and deeply integrated with Android OS. Key responsibilities include: • Maintain and evolve the Native Component Library built with Jetpack Compose, ensuring components are scalable, accessible, and easily consumable by product teams for a consistent experience. • Elevate developer experience for Android by optimizing CI/CD pipelines, expanding test automation strategies, and hardening an automated multi-team release process. • Maintain a high-performance networking stack handling offline-first synchronization, intelligent caching, and secure data transit between native services and the cloud. • Own implementation of low-level protocols (BLE, NFC, custom Wi-Fi handshakes) enabling phones to communicate securely and reliably with physical hardware. • Optimize the type-safe communication layer allowing dynamic web-based components to interact securely with native device sensors, secure enclaves, and core system logic. • Act as technical consultant to product teams, evaluating new patterns (such as Server-Driven UI) to balance native performance with engineering velocity. You will work in an environment that values technical excellence, fast iteration, and daily collaboration with hardware and firmware teams. The role offers exposure to deep-tech challenges including hardware handshakes, battery-efficient backgrounding, and high-performance infrastructure. REQUIREMENTS: • 6+ years of professional Android development with deep mastery of Kotlin and the Android SDK • Strong experience with mobile CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions, Bitrise) and test-first mentality; enjoy building tools that make other engineers more productive • Deep understanding of the networking stack (OkHttp, Retrofit, Protobuf) and experience handling unreliable network conditions at scale • Hands-on experience with Bluetooth (BLE), NFC, or nuances of Android background execution limits • Expert proficiency in Jetpack Compose and experience scaling shared UI libraries across multiple teams • Experience managing the complexity of Google Play Store release cycles for apps with high deployment frequency and multiple contributors
