Salary: USD 115,000 - 200,000 / annual
Formlabs is seeking a Senior 3D Print Optimization Engineer to join the Print Optimization Team in Somerville, MA. The team focuses on optimizing the intersection of hardware, software, and materials to deliver industry-leading print performance across the SLA and SLS product lines, making parts print faster, more reliably, more easily, more accurately, and more beautifully.
In this role, you will drive improved performance by continuously applying problem-solving skills to optimize 3D printing processes. You'll work with a collaborative, diverse team passionate about pushing the boundaries of print performance. The role is customer-focused: you'll start by understanding what performance improvements matter most and how many customers will benefit, whether that's faster printing, improved reliability, easier post-processing, or greater accuracy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Pushing the capabilities of SLA and SLS 3D printing platforms
- Architecting 3D printing optimization methodologies that result in better printer performance
- Driving root cause analysis across mechanics, fluid dynamics, software, chemistry, optics, electronics, thermodynamics, and customer behavior
- Designing efficient experiments that isolate underlying behavior in complex systems with many variables
- Tackling multi-disciplinary problems
- Developing and commercializing solutions that make immediate, measurable impact on customer print performance
You will work autonomously, cross discipline boundaries to solve problems, and learn new skills as needed to achieve objectives. The role emphasizes hands-on work, strong ownership, and attention to detail.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of post-graduate experience
- Experience in test design where results directly impact product performance
- Track record of shipping a product or process to end users
- Customer-focused mindset
- Strong sense of ownership with excellent attention to detail
- Hands-on approach and willingness to cross discipline boundaries
- Ability to work autonomously and learn new skills to tackle objectives
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in any science or engineering discipline
Bonus qualifications:
- Coding experience, ideally Python
- Computer-aided design (CAD) experience
- Understanding of material properties and characterization
- Participation in the release of a new product
