Pronto AI is a global leader in commercializing autonomous vehicle technology, deploying Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) that automate operations in mines, quarries, and construction sites worldwide. The company delivers production-ready autonomy already operating in the field and is building toward becoming the world's first profitable AV technology company. In this role, you will own safety engineering for mining deployments, managing the safety case and commissioning processes for autonomous trucks operating in real-world environments. Your responsibilities include: - Building and maintaining the off-road truck safety case, including claims, evidence, limits, and open items, keeping it current as trucks, sites, and software change - Conducting hazard analysis at both system and operational levels, translating results into requirements and site controls - Defining test procedures, acceptance criteria, and evidence requirements before autonomous operation at a site - Serving as the commissioning gate—determining when a site is ready for autonomous operation - Managing incident intake, severity assessment, investigations, and corrective actions through verified closure - Assessing the safety impact of software releases, truck variants, and site layout changes - Leading a small team of one to two engineers, hiring as the work justifies, while retaining ownership of critical safety determinations, commissioning gates, and investigations - Leveraging AI tooling to increase productivity and enable a small team to cover work that would otherwise require several people - Building custom tooling for site risk assessments, procedure adaptation, event triage, and cross-site pattern identification - Maintaining rigor around the boundary between AI-generated hypotheses and human-verified safety determinations The role is based in San Francisco with five-day-per-week onsite work. Travel to sites is expected as needed. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years in systems safety, safety engineering, or closely related systems discipline in a safety-critical domain - Demonstrated experience building a safety argument from scratch (claims, evidence, structure) and defending its sufficiency - Structured hazard analysis depth at both system and operational levels, with judgment to select appropriate methods - Experience writing investigation, triage, qualification, or equivalent processes (not inheriting them) - Comfortable leading one or two people while remaining the primary author of the safety case - Python or SQL proficiency sufficient to work event data independently - Willingness to travel to sites as needed NICE TO HAVE: - Off-road, heavy vehicle, or industrial machinery experience (mining, quarrying, aggregates, construction, ports, agriculture) - Working knowledge of US mine safety regulation (MSHA Part 46, 48, and 50) - Experience commissioning autonomous or remotely operated equipment on customer sites - Experience adapting existing safety methods to new domains - Experience building a small team from the ground up
