Synthego is seeking a Process Development Engineer to design, develop, and implement methods for scaling oligonucleotide synthesis and purification. You will synthesize, purify, and analyze oligonucleotides to specifications using proprietary and commercial instrumentation, and analyze data from assays such as UV, chromatograms, and mass spectrometry to optimize experimental conditions and determine root causes of failures.
You will work alongside a cross-functional team of chemists, engineers, and scientists to execute developmental processes and collaborate on designed experiments. Key responsibilities include conducting experimentation using automated instrumentation and liquid handling equipment, writing development protocols and reports, and regularly presenting findings to interdepartmental stakeholders. You will conduct IQ/OQ/PQ for new instrumentation acquired for development projects, contribute ideas for continuous improvement, and generate and maintain detailed records and documents.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with quality data management (writing and updating Standard Operating Procedures, Batch Records, and Change Control documents), working with vendors to acquire reagents and instrumentation, and training others on new or updated processes and procedures.
This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced, collaborative biotech startup environment where you'll have direct impact on product development and scaling.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bio-engineering, or similar field
- 2–5 years of industry experience in a research, manufacturing, or production environment, preferably in a small company or startup setting
- Direct experience in the synthesis and analysis of oligonucleotide products
- Experience in data analysis with languages such as Python or SQL
- Understanding of aseptic handling techniques, including liquid handling, pipetting, reagent preparation, and consumables
- Experience using larger-scale instrumentation such as HPLCs, oligonucleotide or peptide synthesizers, tangential flow filtration, and/or liquid handlers
- Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to curate and execute development projects
NICE TO HAVE:
- Deep knowledge of oligonucleotide chemistry or reagent manufacturing, specifically using fluorophores, quenchers, or other oligonucleotide modifiers
- Familiarity with qPCR
- Familiarity with fluorescence assays and how to create functional tests for newly developed products
- Familiarity with biotechnical instrumentation (coding new methods, data analysis pipelines, servicing, etc.)
