Orenda develops, builds, owns, and operates battery energy storage projects in dense urban environments to make the electrical grid more efficient and bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and consumption. The company is headquartered in Brooklyn and operates at the forefront of distributed energy resource (DER) infrastructure. The Origination Team identifies potential project sites, performs site diligence, prepares interconnection applications, interprets utility system studies, and manages a growing pipeline of development opportunities. As Principal Engineer, Interconnection, you will serve as the senior technical authority for the Origination Engineering function. You will own the design templates, product narratives, and technical directives that guide the team's daily work, keeping them optimal as utility specifications, products, and investment strategies evolve. You will lead technical negotiations affecting project viability, particularly with utilities like Con Edison on substation upgrades, cost deduplication, and cost sharing. For each new investment strategy, you will derive the optimal interconnection approach with validation plans and process documentation. Key responsibilities include: optimizing standard designs for cost and footprint; reviewing and stamping drawing packages; qualifying new technologies and OEMs (battery platforms, EV charging) for process compatibility; mentoring the Staff Electrical Engineer and Designer through structured technical review; and rapidly absorbing and implementing breaking changes in utility specifications. In the next six months, you will take ownership of design standards for a 100+ project Con Edison portfolio, drive specification optimizations into production, and shape market entry strategies. You report to the Director of Origination Engineering and will be the most senior technical voice in a fast-moving team. This role requires deep expertise in distribution interconnection, DER studies (NY SIR/CESIR), IEEE 1547, hosting capacity analysis, and utility negotiation. You will convert engineering judgment into repeatable templates and directives that junior engineers can execute correctly daily. The position is full-time, in-office at Brooklyn headquarters, five days per week, with regular travel to NYC-area project sites.
