Octopus Energy is a rapidly growing global energy business seeking a Power Grid Analyst to support grid analysis and modeling across data centres and industrial applications. The role combines technical grid expertise with commercial insight to inform capital expenditure strategy and shape energy systems for participants in the UK and internationally. Key Responsibilities: - Map, analyze, and model electricity grids across various markets; provide insights to inform capex strategy with emphasis on non-wire solutions - Conduct techno-economic and electrical power flow modeling to define optimal resource mixes against specific objectives (grid constraints, peak profile, LOLE, LCOE) - Perform technical assessments of solutions for grid quality and stability issues, focusing on non-wire alternatives (flexibility and battery energy storage systems) - Support grid development planning and Integrated Resource Plan design for technical sign-off - Analyze grid constraints and interconnection queues to provide actionable insights - Explore expansion into commercial modeling The analyst will work with a modern data platform stack including Python, Databricks, Kubernetes, Terraform, Streamlit, Airflow, Spark, DBT, and SparkSQL. Success requires strong technical communication skills to present complex findings to non-technical audiences, collaborative mindset across multiple teams, and proactive approach to developing tools and capabilities to answer business questions. Octopus operates dozens of businesses across 30+ countries, spanning renewable generation, domestic flexibility, heat pumps, and EV charging infrastructure. Requirements: - Strong background in energy systems, or educational background in electrical engineering or power system modeling - Advanced power flow modeling expertise (PSCAD, PSSE, PowerFactory, PandaPower) and knowledge of non-linear optimization; ability to run or develop deterministic physics-based grid modeling tools - Knowledge of linear economic modeling tools (e.g., PLEXOS) is a plus - Experience with distributed energy resources (DERs), medium and high voltage grids, and utility-scale energy projects - Deep understanding of energy economics and grid infrastructure principles - Ability to generate insights from large, complex energy data sets - Comfort starting projects from scratch, proactively sourcing data, and iterating rapidly - Natural curiosity and passion for grid systems and the energy transition - Excellent technical communication and ability to present to non-technical audiences - Preference for simplicity and reliable tools over complex frameworks
